Researchers recently demonstrated a higher-order nodal-line semimetal (NLSM) in an acoustic system, expanding the repertoire of topological materials. This phononic crystal, created using 3D printing, exhibits unique boundary states that could find applications in acoustic sensing and energy harvesting. The discovery offers insights into higher-order topological phases, with potential implications for solid materials research. #Microfluidics allows for the precise manipulation of fluids on a sub-millimeter scale, facilitating the creation of compact, efficient, and cost-effective devices for various biological and chemical applications, thanks to the benefits of miniaturization.   This fascinating study tackles a major challenge in the field: how to produce microfluidic devices in a cost-effective and efficient manner. The research, conducted by Professor Tony Jun Huang's group at Duke University, overcomes this hurdle by utilizing 3D printing to create a surface acoustic wave (SAW)-based microfluidic device. Researchers from the Institute of Chemistry and Technology of Biobased Systems - IBioSys at TU Graz developed 3D-printed anisotropic nanofiber composites with tunable mechanical properties using a polysaccharide ink composed of nanocellulose, alginate, and CacO3 nanoparticles, aiming to address the limitations of existing materials. Chirality can be transferred from circularly polarized light to nanoscale matter. Puzzling? It is actually pretty simple. This video capturing the 3D profile of imperfect silver pillar shows that that when it interact with circularly light, the helicity of the electromagnetic field is recreated around the pillar. The hot spots stimulated the reduction of silver that makes the pillar helical, too. Then, the electromagnetic field swirls even stronger, creating positive chirality-reinforcing feedback. We used this for making forests of silver helicoids. The cool thing is it works on any substrate we tried. 😀 See more in the recent paper in PNAS titled "Direct-write 3D printing of plasmonic nanohelicoids by circularly polarized light". New Assistant Professor Ji-Young Kim from RPI, who is the first author on this paper, deserves all the credit for this cool video.
