Biotech's Research Funding Puzzle: Bridging Gaps through Multidisciplinary Collaboration: - In our day-to-day interactions with scientists from the government and corporations, where funding for research comes up as a challenge. Having said that we find that some labs are doing extremely well while others are struggling, the same is the case with companies selling products in research. Some are able to deliver their numbers while others are creeping with the issue. The challenge of Abundance: Is the abundance of new instrumentation technologies, ready-to-use kits, and reagents, and sophisticated software making the new generation of researchers dependent and increasing the need for higher funding to carry out the same experiments, both on the capex and opex side. The second important aspect is the funding agencies: Whether the Government; or Corporate. While comparing the funding for Biotech Research from the past three years is a very marginal increment in the budget. This increment is just enough to cope with the inflation. Also in the case of corporate’s if the research funding is less than 2-3% of the turnover. But how much control do we have over these external factors? The third important aspect is Multidisciplinary Collaboration: We have outstanding chemists, botanists, microbiologists, zoologists, Biotechnologists, and clinicians as individual Investigators/Researchers. When we have a stable Government at the center which is demanding, it is only the interdisciplinary collaborations that will help us to come up with some applied research area. These kinds of collaborations should be done at all levels, project writing, experiment designing, executions, and patent filing/publishing paper. When we have limited resources for funding, skilled manpower, infrastructure, and in-house expertise of multiple applications it is only collaborations, which are mutually fulfilling. For those of you who are bio-curious but don't know how or where to start, this one's for you. Our Civic Science charity, BioQuisitive Ltd is finally reopening its doors after a long slumber. We're strong believers in praxis, the process of applying theory, lessons or skills in an enacted, embodied, relational context. We see this space as a 'Living Laboratory' exploring curiosity and challenge-led educational approaches at the intersection of biology, design, and technology. We'll be co-creating workshops that are intended to provide hands-on learning experiences in Synthetic Biology, Biomaterials, Cell Culturing and Biomanufacturing. We are also exploring the co-creation of a biodesign studio where people can collaborate with living systems on projects that embody the principles of biological and ecological design. Thanks to everyone who has supported us through the revival process! Your countless hours of help, equipment donations and financial support have been essential to bring this lab back to life. 💕 #CivicScience #CommunityHub #Education #STEM #Biology #Mycology #MaterialScience #CircularEconomy #LivingLaboratory

Medicine isn’t reading a high impact publication. Medicine a therapeutic option that saves lives. But it isn’t moving forward at the pace that it could. It is too slow and the current workforce is inadequate for solving our big scientific problems. And YET there are capable scientists who are passionate about making a difference but are not allowed to do so. They are stuck in academia and cannot get out, because of barriers to entry. What kinds of barriers? • Transitions from academia to the biotech and pharma industry • Transitions from industry into entrepreneurship • Transitions from R&D into the business of science 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗱. To that end, I am excited to share that I will be working with the amazing team at Persephoni BioPartners to remove these barriers, and fundamentally change the capabilities of our scientific workforce. Forever. #biotech, #biotechnology, #scientist

As anyone who works in UK Biotech (or any wet lab / chemistry-dependent sector) will testify, lab space is a major hurdle that SMEs face when trying to grow and evolve. As such, it's heartening to see the Royal Society of Chemistry launch their More ChemLabs initiative aimed at finding solutions to this. If you are interested in finding out more about this, or have ideas about how to help, then check out the page below, which also links to the RSC's report on this: "Unlocking Innovation - a systems approach to addressing the shortage of chemistry labs for startups" https://lnkd.in/dTyri27q
