Five Quick Things about Voicemail: 1. Make it brief 2. Anything of importance needs to go in the first 10 seconds (name, company, phone number). Anything that comes after that has a lesser chance of being heard, so you need to get the good stuff in early. 3. They’re probably not get a call you back, so the best that you can do is to make a positive impression. Be positive, upbeat, and memorable. 4. With each subsequent voicemail message, remind them of your diligence: “This is the 3rd time I’ve called. How many people call you three times? Can you imagine how hard I am going to work for you when you become a client?” According to my highly suspect and random study of audiences over the years, 90% of all first-time voicemail message sales calls go without a follow-up. Across 37 users in Magnetic Mail, there are 2,000+ unread messages. Pause. We get you a response. The Magnetic Mail system works. But now what? You get a response, and you don’t respond? That’s bad form. But there’s more nuance to this story. Over half of the responses are the typical “Thanks for connecting” messages. You don’t need to respond to those. The other half is a gateway to a conversation that isn’t being used. The other half of the messages were a mix of: → Tell me more… → I’m not interested right now… → Maybe when the contract ends, the current provider reach back out… People, respond to all these messages! It’s permission to engage in a conversation. Do you do all this work to get responses so that you can sit on them? No! Respond to your messages. Those that do never have a dry sales pipeline.

SDRs: why do so few of you leave voicemails? I get 20+ spam calls per day that keep me from answering my phone. The spammers use the same tools you do, so they all look like local non-spam calls. If you don't leave a voicemail or text me, it's like you never called at all. I don't know who you are. I don't know why you called. I have no incentive to call back an anonymous number. Email follow-up doesn't work, your cold emails go to spam. Your ONLY chance is to leave me a message. But you don't. What am I missing? #sales #salesstrategy #sdr

Does cold calling work? Yes it does if you are doing it correctly. One of the main hurdles with cold calling is low connect rates. In the couple of years, US phone carriers have been cracking down on spam calls by flagging any numbers that have suspicious activity. So when you're making cold calls, how can you avoid being marked as spam? Two main ways: 1. Register with the Free Caller Registry (I'll link it in the comments) 2. Rotate phone numbers every few weeks If you want to automate this stuff, most auto dialers like Trellus (YC W22) or PhoneBurner have software in place that does it for you.
