👤 Alexander Moreira-Almeida, Professor at UFJF - Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora, was one of the researchers supported by the #BIALFoundation to present his project entitled ‘National Survey of “Cases of Reincarnation Type” in Brazil’ at the 14th "Behind and Beyond the Brain" Symposium. 📜 The team led by Alexander Moreira-Almeida, with the support of the BIAL Foundation, conducted a nationwide survey in Brazil with the aim of better understanding who are the people who claim past-life memories, because although there are several studies involving children who claim to have these memories, there are few involving adults. The fifth program item for our conference! The focus of the day is to find ways to detect sexual exploitation among children, and methods to better respond to those who are exposed. 📍 Detecting Pornography Victims Many young women who are subjected to sexual exploitation are also exposed to pornography. What can it look like and what do we need to learn to discover this? With: Meghan Donevan, research leader Talita and PhD student at the Department of Clinical Sciences, Umeå University. Sounds interesting? Register for the conference via the link: https://lnkd.in/du_VXU38

📅 In February 2024, POIESIS member Dr. Anne-Sophie Behm-Bahtat from Wissenschaft im Dialog organised three online focus groups with different institutional actors from all over Germany as part of Work Package 3. The participants in the three groups – university communicators, research integrity officers, and members of research funding organisations – discussed the role of institutions for public trust in science and what can be done to improve conditions for research integrity and societal integration in institutions and beyond. 🔬 The three different groups of institutional actors had lively 2-hour long discussions exploring the topics of trust in science, integrity and integration from different institutional angles. Altogether, participants did not so much see a crisis of public trust in science but rather a crisis of trust in public institutions. They underlined the importance of a comprehensive 'culture of integrity' at all institutional levels and also discussed why the 'how' of societal integration might actually be more important than the 'how much'. #PTPOIESIS #TrustInScience

When will our governments learn that the focus of education needs to be STEAM, not STEM? Not supporting the Humanities and Social Sciences will have a dire effect upon our economy and the future of our communities.
Heartbroken or kicked in the guts?! I am one of so many across the social sciences and humanities in Aotearoa that is processing both right now. Minister of Science, Innovation and Technology Judith Collins today announced the Government has updated the Marsden Fund to "focus on core scientific research that helps lift our economic growth and contributes to science with a purpose". Science with a purpose.... is this in contrast to an imagined social science without a purpose? Continuing, she states: "The focus of the [Marsden] Fund will shift to core science, with the humanities and social sciences panels disbanded and no longer supported. Real impact on our economy will come from areas such as physics, chemistry, maths, engineering and biomedical sciences." My early career benefited hugely from a Marsden Fast-Start in the Social Sciences, and over the past three years it has been an honor to serve on the Marsden SOC Panel, and Chair the Marsden SOC Fast-Start for the past two years. During this time I have seen many amazing, high impact, socially important and world leading projects being funded. It has been a privilege to support our research communities through this mahi. And so for me this announcement is both personal and political. I am particularly saddened by the affect of this decision on our talented early career researchers (and future research leaders). But it is also the wider implications of this that worry me... on how the social sciences and humanities are viewed and valued in our universities, and also among the New Zealand public. This feels like a very slippery slope. Today's announcement cuts deeply and I am sending out much aroha to our research communities tonight, and as the dust settles, perhaps there is a collective response, something that brings us together in support, solidarity and action....

📢 Call for Abstracts 📢 The #ESRA25 call for abstracts is officially open, and I’m excited to invite you to contribute to a session I’m organizing on “Advances in Life History Data Collection” at the 11th European Survey Research Association (ESRA) conference in Utrecht, The Netherlands 🇳🇱, July 14-18, 2025. In this session, we’ll explore the latest innovations and challenges in life history data collection, especially in self-administered survey modes. Life history data are essential for understanding complex phenomena such as career and educational trajectories, but collecting high-quality retrospective data remains a significant challenge. 🔍 We’re particularly interested in: - Techniques to improve respondent recall - Methods like Life History Calendars (LHCs) - Addressing memory bias and recall error - Standardizing life history data collection across studies This session is an exciting opportunity to share insights on advancing data collection methods that balance accuracy and participant burden. 📅 Interested? Submit your abstract by December 20, 2024! Let’s push the boundaries of what’s possible in survey research! 👉 Learn more about the session and submit your abstract: https://lnkd.in/drDTWcGi #SurveyResearch #LifeHistoryData #DataCollection #ESRA2025 #AcademicResearch #SelfAdministeredSurveys #SocialScienceResearch

An open note to the Wake Forest community at large and the Wake Forest Jewish community. The events of the past few weeks have demonstrated discussions about freedom of speech, students standing up for their rights and beliefs, faculty standing up for their rights, and an administration trying to support freedom of speech, their faculty, their students and their greater community. They have also shown how the world can come together when things don’t seem right. In the end, I believe the administration came to the right decision. Cancel the pro-Hamas anti-Semitic speaker on October 7. https://lnkd.in/etD5YxYN I know that this was not a simple decision. Faculty need to have the right to bring in speakers who represent all sides of important issues. However, it is the administration’s responsibility to make sure that whoever comes to our campus does not cause pain or fear in our community, nor stand for something contrary to the fundamental values at our core. Terrorism, is not one of those values. As we move forward from this event, we need to have a continuing conversation with our school from academic and administrative perspectives. I believe that this event was scheduled to intimidate, provoke and challenge the administration at the expense of our community. I would like to commend the administration and ask that my fellow Wake community members do the same. It is not easy or taken lightly for administration to cancel an academic sponsored event. I would suggest that we look forward, and have a constructive discussion about how we can make sure that this does not happen again. I do not believe this talk was scheduled for any good academic reason and was not in the best interest of our students. To quote the letter that my son sent to the department heads, “Wouldn't it make sense to bring in a scholar who can evoke productive and empathetic conversations towards all people? One who does not cause pain to any person in our community? Wouldn't it be better to support our students on this 1st anniversary of a murderous slaughter and wait a few weeks to have a conversation about how we can learn and grow into leaders who can find ways for all of us to live in peace and without terrorism?” This is what we should have seen from our faculty. I think the next step in the evolution of this controversy is to support our institution in ensuring that this is the approach taken towards the hard subjects that so desperately need conversation in a Pro Humanitate manner.
