I really valued the Amazon HR org's commitment to robust experimentation and innovation when I was there. With this 5-day-in-office mandate, I'm fascinated to see findings, especially on: (1) ED&I and (2) the impact on global teams who aren't co-located, or even in the same timezone. Please do share research, insights or anecdotes you're seeing as this experiment plays out. https://lnkd.in/eT-2YDat

I wonder how long to we hear about mass resignations at Amazon... Or Amazon complaining about it being hard to find or hire top talent. Why make the office a mandate when work can be done from everywhere, why?! Give me some good reasons to help me understand this. #HR #HumanResources #HRmanagement #WFH #RTO #FutureOfWork

Amazon might want (desk) staff back in the office full time, but "Prof Bloom, from Stanford University, said he did not think the announcements were a sign of a wider shift in work policies, noting that his data has found time spent at the office has been fairly stable for more than a year." So it seems that there is more reporting of companies that are ditching the hybrid model than those maintaining or expanding it. In my opinion, it all comes down to the numbers. If you're productive and it shows in the data, that's all that counts. Not the location, just the outputs. https://lnkd.in/dU9UNmbe #employeeengagement #leadership #hr #employeeexperience #humanresources #business #employeeappreciation #companyculture #management #culture #employeewellbeing #teamwork #teambuilding #motivation

Recent discussions around Amazon’s return-to-office policy have prompted me to reflect not only on how much the workplace landscape has evolved but also on the thinking behind such decisions. Flexibility is no longer a luxury—it’s essential for promoting both employee well-being and organizational success. But these decisions raise critical questions: Are we truly listening to our employees? Are we evaluating what’s working and what needs improvement in our current work models? Before implementing major changes, it’s vital to ask: What is the real goal? Are we addressing the core challenges our organizations face, and have we carefully considered the impact these decisions will have on employee engagement, productivity, and retention? Research consistently shows that employees are just as productive—if not more—when they have the autonomy to choose their work environment. This autonomy fosters engagement, satisfaction, and loyalty, creating a stronger, more committed workforce. The pandemic opened doors for talented individuals—parents, people with disabilities, caregivers—who may have previously struggled to enter or remain in the workforce. Scaling back flexible work options now risks losing this talent and reversing the progress we’ve made toward more inclusive workplaces. The way we work has permanently shifted. To truly thrive, organizations need to focus on building a culture based on trust, outcomes, well-being, and connection, rather than physical location. It’s not where we work that determines success; it’s the environment we create that enables people to do their best work. https://lnkd.in/eMyNPiTu

OH-NO-RTO See below from Dan Bladen. Many leaders I talk to agree with what Andy Jassy believes, namely that flexible working has shredded productivity and Presenteeism is the answer. But how to answer these issues: 1)how do you compensate people who were promised flexibility only to have it withdrawn; 2) how do you train or equip managers to manage asymmetric work flows in a way which factors in the flexibility people want; 3) how do people have time to manage the techno bureaucracy which is becoming more and more evident in everyday life which needs time away from the desk? No one has the answers. It continued to be a binary debate. This pull-push fight surely must end. Amazon Amazon Web Services (AWS) is an incredible company in so many ways : they must have felt a bit desperate to do this and I think many C-suite execs wish they could do the same except this: it doesn't work!! I believe: * in new times you need new models * success is iterative not one size fits all * sharing best practice (and worst) works My new project #workathon aims to provide some insight into who is doing what and how it is working out. If you would like to know a bit more email me: [email protected] Work is a marathon, not a sprint. But we have to agree a common direction! #work #furureofwork #flexiblework
Will this be the last time a CEO tries an RTO mandate? A survey of 2,585 Amazon employees on the anonymous platform Blind revealed that 73% are considering looking for new job opportunities following the RTO announcement. 😒 Impact on Morale: 80% of those surveyed know colleagues who are also contemplating leaving due to the policy change. Many employees express that this move has been a blow to morale and could disproportionately affect parents and caregivers who rely on flexible work arrangements. 👨💼 👩💼 Career Reevaluation: According to Glassdoor, 74% of Amazon workers are rethinking their future careers, whether within the company or elsewhere. 📊 Employee Advocacy: An internal survey reported by Fortune indicates that Amazon workers are “strongly dissatisfied” with the new policy. The survey, shared on company Slack channels—including a “remote advocacy” group with over 30,000 members—aims to provide leadership with insights into employee challenges and proposed solutions. https://lnkd.in/gmPg7xh4

Amazon's return-to-office mandate is sparking debate. 📉 A recent poll shows that 36% of senior-level job seekers have been influenced to look elsewhere due to such policies. The return-to-work debate isn't just about collaboration—it's about retaining top talent. Is insisting on in-office presence worth the risk of losing key employees? An interesting story on return to office mandates and the changing nature of the workforce expectations. This and other stories of a similar nature, seems to indicate a workforce that has evolved from the traditional office based one, and the gap between them and business leaders who are still entrenched in the office culture. Only time will tell which culture will become the "norm" ..until the next cultural shift occurs. What are your thoughts? #pmandre #workplaceculture #returntooffice #amazon

The order from Amazon’s CEO to bring worker back to the office will undoubtly spark further conversations at Board level in companies around the world. Recently, a memo from the NSW Premier stated that “government sector employees should work principally in an approved office, workplace or related work site, with mandatory compliance by executive agencies.” In essence, this means that public sector workers will need to adopt a new hybrid work policy with a minimum of 3 days in the office. Furthermore, Australia will soon see the introduction of “working from home” clauses in some Awards (E.g.: Clerks). In the light of recent research (Bloom/Stanford) pointing out to hybrid work models leading to increased employee satisfaction and retention and productivity gain, the trend is for employers to adopt a flexible and adaptable approach. I am curious to see how this bold/drastic order from Amazon’s CEO will unfold in the next few months and whether other companies will follow his example.
Hybrid Working: Are We Getting It Right? Amazon’s blanket Return to Office policy is a bold and bullish move which will doubtless spark debate in boardrooms around the world. (I'm not here to tell them they're wrong, but is it right for everyone?) https://lnkd.in/ewRv3qJ8 It appears to fly in the face of research (Bloom/Stanford) which points out the many benefits of a Hybrid policy, not least of which are an increase in employee satisfaction, retention, and a productivity gain. But it’s not a straightforward or a “one size fits all” kind of decision. The challenge for most organisations is understanding what their options really are in hard commercial terms. In real terms, what would a change in policy mean for their ability to attract and retain new people, how would fewer or more days in the office impact productivity or innovation? What would all this mean in real commercial terms and how can they test and model that to make an informed and evidence-based decision? That's where our new HR Cost Optimizer comes in. It provides data-driven insights that help companies make smarter decisions. The HR Visualiser models key KPIs (like recruitment costs, attrition rates, engagement, productivity and even innovation potential) to simulate different scenarios—whether you’re considering a flexible hybrid policy or a more traditional return-to-office strategy. You’ll find unique patterns when you model KPIs like diversity, innovation, and retention in different hybrid scenarios. Interested in seeing how this works for your organisation? Comment below, or message me directly to try the dashboard for yourself and see how data can lead to smarter workforce decisions. I'll even add a visual to the comments to show you how this can be modelled. 2moKeen to see what this does to the culture at Amazon and further impact on talent retention. That said, Fortune should know better than to quote Blind poll numbers as the people on Blind don’t necessarily represent the views of the majority of Amazon employees.
