As host for the newly launched show Startup Caps, brought to you by Onafriq on CNBC Africa- I'm excited to delve deeper into the insights from our first episode, where we explored the current venture capital landscape in Africa. In 2023, despite a global downturn, Africa's venture capital scene remained a beacon of strategic investments, totaling $3.6 billion across various sectors. Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, and Egypt—Africa's "big four"—continued to dominate, with Nigeria maintaining its lead in deal volume. This highlights the continent's potential as a hotbed for innovation and investment, despite broader economic challenges. The financial sector, leading in both deal volume and value, attracted $1.7 billion, a slight decrease from the previous year. This sector's resilience is crucial as it plays a pivotal role in enhancing financial inclusion across the continent. Following closely, the Information Technology sector showed vibrant activity, especially in areas like SaaS, affordable internet, and cybersecurity services. These sectors are not just surviving but thriving by adapting and innovating in response to market needs. Investment sources also painted an interesting picture in 2023. U.S. investors led the charge with 233 deals, underscoring their significant role in Africa's venture capital scene. However, it's encouraging to see the growth in local investments, with South Africa leading among African countries with 89 deals. This shift towards more localized funding is vital for the sustainability and independence of the African startup ecosystem. Private capital raised by startups in Southeast Asia and India more than halved in 2023, compared with the previous year, marking the second straight fall in annual deal value. However, unlike in 2022, when the number of venture transactions was more or less flat vis-à-vis 2021, last year saw a significant fall in deal volumes.

Founders Factory Africa has rebranded as 54 Collective VC, a venture capital firm with a $40 million fund that invests in early-stage African startups across various sectors. “Becoming a venture capital firm allows the company to expand its revenue model. 54 Collective invests up to $250,000, depending on the business’s stage. It also provides non-dilutive capital of up to $150,000. Non-dilutive capital allows startups to retain full ownership of their company. In the case of 54 Collective, it is a loan charged at 5%.” Speaking about the VC firm’s plans, Bongani Sithole, CEO of 54 Collective, said, “In the next five years starting from last year, we want to invest in 105 venture-bankable startups. Per year, we are doing 21 businesses. By the end of this year, we will be at 42 startups. We are currently at 29 startups.” Via TechCabal. https://lnkd.in/ePB9deFv #funding #venturecapital #africa #vcfirm
