Absolutely tracks (and of course it does, because Amanda is smart). If you can't afford specialists because you have to keep your team small, you have no choice but staff with generalists—and even then, there's no such thing as a total generalist, we all have a little more experience or talent in one thing over another. But when organisations grow, at some point they need the specialist in specific areas where problems arise: to keep their IA coherent, to make their content plan bullet-proof for years, to keep the design system of high structural quality, things you only learn by doing them over and over. Even in mid-sized teams it is nice to be able to mix designers with different capabilities up to get the best work from working together. No generalist can have gone deep enough in every field to be ready when a multitude of deep problems crop up; none of us have worked long enough. On the other hand, it is really hard to specialise as a UXer in your career unless you are in a place that always has a ton of choice of work. It is also risky because when your specialty is somehow considered passé, you may be stuck in a niche nobody wants and have to rebrand on the spot. You still need all-rounders for all kinds of other work in your team, but when your problems get hairy because you are doing so much as a company, you really need those heroes.

My view on hiring generalists vs specialists. You can hear more on the whole podcast about how we have created a world class design team in this 'generalist era'.

Worthy Read: This will make you a better decision maker | Annie Duke (author of “Thinking in Bets” and “Quit”, former pro poker player) by Lenny Rachitsky I’m a big fan of Annie Duke’s Thinking in Bets. And I was delighted to hear her opening story on Lenny’s Podcast where she shared that teams should first do the work individually, share their diverse perspectives, and then co-create a group version. We follow this exact pattern in all of our courses and it’s how I recommend product trios collaborate. The episode was full of gems. Give it a listen. Check it out here: https://buff.ly/40A1dnt ❓ Annie Duke discusses using pre-mortems and "kill criteria" to improve decision-making. How do you apply similar strategies in your product work to avoid sunk cost traps and overconfidence bias? #prodmgmt #ux #engineering

1moInteresting perspective, whilst the model can work, it's going to be increasingly difficult to argue having an army of in-house specialists from a cost perspective, and speed of execution. And specialist designers might find it difficult to find work in the future / progress in their career.
