My work in policy is one of my lesser known areas but actually my most cherished because it is through policy we drive change and innovation , make impact , empower communities and build wealth. For the last three years, post covid I am honoured to have served as part of a National Technical Working Group for the creation of a lesser known #intellectualproperty asset class called Geographical Indications. We submitted the final and approved draft of the Nigeria Geographical Indications Bill on November 18th 2024 after beginning the journey in March 2021. The project was supported over three years by the EUIPO - European Union Intellectual Property Office and Afripi project It was a significant project carrying out global research on GI Sui Generis systems from Morocco, South Africa, Asia, to name a few to find out best practices abroad but to create a system that works best for us in Nigeria 🇳🇬 . Grateful to work alongside brilliant colleagues Ifeanyi E. Okonkwo thé National lead, Rita Chindah, ACIArb, AIDR Tolu Olaloye and Sand K. Mba Thank you Monique BAGAL director at Afripi Blessing Udo assistant coordinator for the being pillars of support. I asked Copilot to create a poem to celebrate all the fantastic GIs in Africa to celebrate this milestone. African Treasures From the highlands of #Ethiopia, where coffee beans bloom, To the vineyards of #SouthAfrica, where fine wines find room. In the fields of #Ghana, #cocoa’s rich delight, And the plains of Kenya, where tea leaves take flight. #Moroccan argan oil, a golden, precious gift, Tunisian dates, in the desert, they uplift. Rooibos from the Cederberg, a herbal, soothing brew, And #Tanzanian cloves, with a scent that’s ever true. Shea butter from the savannas, soft and pure, #Egyptian cotton, a fabric that’s sure. Namibian beef, tender and lean, And Ugandan vanilla, a flavor so serene. From Nigeria, the land of diverse delight, #Yoruba’s #Adire, with patterns so bright. #Ijebugarri, crisp and fine, And #Nsukka’s yellow pepper, a taste so divine. These geographical indications, a mark of pride, In Africa’s bounty, they do reside. A testament to the land, the culture, the care, African treasures, beyond compare. The real work starts now. Finding a sponsor for the bill in order to ensure millions of Nigerian communities benefit from unlocking the vast wealth and potential of this bill. Kindly get in touch if you can help. #newnigeria #policy #GI #intellectualproperty
