Ranchers Who Don't Want to Keep Records This post is for you. Records, especially when you are scheduling when to pick up your neighbor's bull. How do you know exactly when your ladies are in estrus? Guessing isn't very predictable. I'm not a rancher, but I've looked at some interesting electronic record keeping systems for dairy herds. There was a thread on here about beef cattle and record keeping/inventory records. In Michigan my first question went to a tech savvy dairy farmer. He said there were tag systems out for beef cattle. I did some Googling. There isn't a big change going to wifi ear tags from basic ear tags. I'm sure there's a price differential but the tech tags let you know EXACTLY when your girl's ready for that bull so you save money. They also track animal health so you can take care of an issue BEFORE it becomes an issue, again saving you money. Which part of your herd is most at risk? Or how do you want to improve your herd? When you know what your goal is you may be able; to find an electronic ear tag that's just the right fit. It doesn't appear that you can customize metrics specifically to your operation, yet. But I'll bet someone's working on that. Think how much time and money you could save with a little up-front ear tag management. Here's the links to examples of what's out there on the market. If you already know about these ear tags comment why, or why not, are you using them. I'd like to know. I don't know much about this tech, and I don't know which ones are the most reliable. But I do know that as a farmer myself, keeping records is a pain in the butt. The Global Farmer Network has just launched a miniseries as part of its Global Farmer Voices podcast, centering via partnership the Global Farmer Voice survey supported by Bayer. The first episode features stories of 3 Global Farmer Network members from different regions, Austria, Brazil and the Philippines, grounded in some of the questions asked in the survey, including, "How did you come to start farming?; Why do you still farm?; What does it mean to you to be a Farmer?" The survey was independently conducted by Kynetec, a global leader in data, analytics and insights in agriculture, animal health and nutrition. Importantly, in line with market research best practices, respondents were unaware that the survey was being conducted on Bayer’s behalf so as to not bias their answers. Rethink Priorities has a research agenda on understanding the welfare of insects on farms and, as part of this, they recently funded an investigation into whether praying mantids feel pain. Praying mantids are famous for the cannibalistic copulatory behaviour exhibited by some of their species. Previously, this behaviour has been cited as evidence that insects lack nociceptive capacities and cannot feel pain. However, this behaviorally driven hypothesis has never been rigorously tested at the genetic or functional level. Until now! Their findings suggest that mantids are likely to possess 'nociceptive capabilities'.
