TaylorBaynes was retained by a South Europe-based IoT Environmental Monitoring SaaS platform startup to recruit a Sales Director and 3 European Sales Executives. The client had previously hired 2 Salespeople, each from strong IoT Sales backgrounds, however, they were losing out on sales because so early on in the Sales process they were facing deeply technical questions on environmental engineering topics, not at all related to IoT. 🌍 We talked with our client to understand exactly who they were selling to, what problems they were solving, and why, plus how they had been losing out on sales opportunities - this led us to redefine the Sales profile criteria as below: 1.) My client was targeting large companies which needed an environmental monitoring solution to detect gas leaks, odours etc, therefore this was a business issue. 2.) The buyer profile within the customer was on the Business Side and not the IT side – Chief Environmental Officer, Chief Sustainability Officer, Environmental Engineers. 3.) Early on in the Sales Process, my client faced technical questions about gases and environmental conditions. Therefore, my client needed Salespeople who could answer such questions, and hence, it was clear a more technical Sales Profile was needed—someone from within their industry sector. 4.) IoT or any IT-related technical points were never raised in the first sales meetings and discovery calls. Yet our clients' last two sales employees were from within this sector. 🔎 We spoke with over 463 Salespeople, all of whom had experience either having sold environmental monitoring solutions, worked for environmental/engineering consultancies, or had environmental technical degrees. 💡 A final insight: For a startup to recruit its 1st Salespeople, it is essential to consider exactly who the buying persona and decision maker will be, and then to consider what profile of Salesperson will be able to hold their own when faced with the expected questioning – by understanding a clients problem you can begin to solve it.
