✨ Yesterday’s call with Craig Fairweather left me buzzing with inspiration! 🌟 We dived into how Canberra’s business scene is leveling up ⬆️, with more recognition for successful Indigenous enterprises. Craig nailed it: success isn’t about ego—it’s about collaboration 🤝 and growth 🌱. The Canberra Innovation Network is key 🔑 in connecting the right people with the right opportunities, especially for our Indigenous communities. One story that really hit home 🏡 was how SERVICE ONE teamed up with the University of Canberra to launch Millhouse Ventures. Initially, they tried to cater to both Indigenous and mainstream businesses, but soon realized the need for specialized support. It’s a perfect example of the power of asking for help 🙏 and opportunity for us to collaborat on making a bigger impact 💥. Another golden nugget? Feedback loops 🔄 in accelerators and incubators are crucial. Everyone deserves a shot, regardless of their financial situation 💸, and in order to improve accelerators/incubators, you need good feedback loops to collect data and improve. 💬 Even though this is Australia’s political capital—in both government and culture—Canberra is pure networking and collaboration ground zero 🎯. I’ve always believed that "YOUR NETWORK IS A REFLECTION OF YOU NETWORK" 🌐—and Canberra is where those connections truly come to life. I’m pumped to keep building a stronger, more inclusive business community here in Canberra. Let’s keep asking: "How can we support?" 💪 #IndigenousBusiness #Canberra #Collaboration #Innovation #Networking #CommunityPower

AFRICAN PROVERBS: INTERCONNECTED In a time of climate change, this proverb resonated a lot. "Rain does not fall on one roof alone." The speaks volumes about interconnectedness. Whether in life, business, or ecosystem development, we are all part of a larger network. Our successes, failures, challenges, and opportunities do not exist in isolation—they affect everyone around us. In entrepreneurship and ecosystem building, it’s easy to think of ourselves as lone actors. However, this proverb reminds us that what we do has ripple effects on our teams, partners, communities, and the wider ecosystem. Interconnectedness in entrepreneurship and ecosystems: Every business decision, whether to innovate, scale, or take a risk, affects more than just the entrepreneur making it. Innovation doesn’t happen in a vacuum. The growth or failure of a business has a direct impact on employees, suppliers, and even customers. Similarly, in ecosystem development, collaboration and shared efforts are essential. One success story sparks another. One setback can teach lessons across the network. No challenge is faced alone, and no opportunity belongs to just one player. The same applies to leadership—your actions affect those who follow. Building sustainable businesses and thriving ecosystems requires us to recognise that collective success is more powerful than individual wins. Just like rain falls on every roof, our actions touch the lives of many. How do we ensure that our decisions positively impact the ecosystem around us? As we continue to foster entrepreneurship and innovation across Africa, let’s remember that we’re all part of something greater. Whether we are an entrepreneur, mentor, or ecosystem builder, our actions contribute to the success of those around us. Let’s harness the power of interconnectedness for shared growth and progress. #AfricanProverbs #EcosystemBuilding #EntrepreneurshipSupport #Collaboration #SharedSuccess #Leadership #AfricanInnovation #Interconnectedness #CommunityImpact #RippleEffect

A collaborative culture connects innovators and entrepreneurs to resources needed to fuel their growth. Since 2013, the Atlantic Venture Forum (AVF) has provided a premium showcase opportunity and networking platform to entrepreneurs who want to: • Raise capital to finance their businesses; • Develop peer-to-peer mentoring and partnerships; • Access industry leaders or first customers; and • Activate the networks they need to grow their businesses long-term. It's a great opportunity for tech companies in Atlantic Canada, looking for investment, industry partnership, or first clients as they commercialize and scale up their business. Companies selected to showcase at #AVF2024 from June 5-6 in Halifax can spotlight their company/technology for investors. PITCH EMPTY African pitch events do not (as intended) unlock investments. Hence there is a long overdue need to rethink what and how pitch events can deliver actual value to entrepreneurs - and what activities can actually unlock investments. In the quest to fuel entrepreneurship across Africa, pitch events have long been viewed as the key to unlocking crucial investments. However, my recent micro survey paints a different picture, revealing a stark disconnect between expectations and outcomes. An overwhelming 81% of respondents express that pitch events, in their current form, offer limited to low value, primarily serving as networking or marketing activities rather than the investment catalysts they are intended to be. This feedback begs a critical reassessment of the ecosystem's approach. It's time to question not only the efficacy of pitch events in the African context, where challenges such as trust and access to capital prevail, but also to explore how we might re-imagine these gatherings to truly serve our entrepreneurs and investors alike. The path forward calls for a collaborative re-engineering of pitch events, focusing on creating curated, thematic forums that attract quality deal flow and genuine investment interest. By aligning these events more closely with the needs of both entrepreneurs and investors and by fostering a biannual or quarterly rhythm, we can enhance their relevance and impact. This requires a shift from isolated, project-based events to a coordinated series of investment opportunities, thoughtfully designed with the investor's perspective and the entrepreneur's needs in mind. Moreover, this evolution demands a strategic partnership among all stakeholders, including donors, funders, local investment networks, and entrepreneurs themselves. It's about moving beyond the superficiality of glossy presentations to foster genuine connections, facilitate meaningful conversations, and, ultimately, catalyse sustainable investments. As we stand at this crossroads, the question remains: Are we ready to join hands and redefine the narrative around pitch events in Africa? The goal is clear- to create a more inclusive, effective, and strategic platform for showcasing and scaling the innovative ventures that will drive our continent's future. Are you willing and ready to be part of this process? #InvestmentEcosystem #EntrepreneurshipAfrica #StrategicInnovation #CollaborativeGrowth #SustainableInvestment #AfricanEntrepreneurs #RedefiningPitchEvents #InclusiveEconomy #FutureOfInvestmentInAfrica GrowthAfrica Sidi Saccoh McKevin Ayaba Abderrahmane Chaoui Meryem Mahfoud Jacklyne Iminza-Anyamba Nick Vilelle

🌟 Exciting News at The Council! 🌟 We're thrilled to welcome Vanessa Samaniego as our new Head of Community at The Council! 🎉 Vanessa S. brings a wealth of experience in community building, sales, and operations. She has successfully delivered 19 investor education programs, directly impacting 660+ VCs, angels, and accelerator managers. Additionally, she launched custom programs in 7 markets, including Canada, Colombia, Egypt, Japan, Kenya, Peru, and Saudi Arabia. Her expertise will be invaluable as we continue to build a tight-knit community of early builders from top technology companies who diligence and invest in startups alongside The Council Fund. This operator network serves as both a powerful sourcing mechanism for The Council Fund—where angels receive carry for referring deals we invest in—and a valuable resource for founders seeking access to top-tier operators. This is particularly crucial as we focus on transforming essential industries like agriculture, healthcare, logistics, supply chain, construction, and transportation through innovative software solutions. These sectors, ripe with opportunity for innovation, have historically lacked access to high-level tech talent. At The Council, we’re dedicated to supporting pre-seed companies that are driving Software’s Third Act—transforming the industries that keep our world moving. We see our firm as a bridge between traditional industries and the innovative approaches of top tech operators. Vanessa’s role is pivotal in deepening our connections within our operator community and ensuring our investments are backed by a vibrant, engaged network. This operator community is invaluable because it offers founders—from pre-seed to Series A—access to essential operational expertise that they may not otherwise afford. Vanessa will focus on nurturing and growing this community, providing strategic support to founders as they scale. In the future, we’ll introduce direct founder programs, but Vanessa's primary mission is to curate a top-tier operating network that connects founders with crucial resources and expertise. Welcome to the team, Vanessa! We're excited to see the incredible impact you'll make. 🚀 #VentureCapital #CommunityBuilding #SoftwareInnovation #Investment #TheCouncil #EssentialIndustries
