Positive impact aside, infrastructure projects can have a negative climate impact. In designing and financing infrastructure projects, it is essential to consider potential adverse effects and externalities. A vital tool to value climate externalities and include them in the valuation of infrastructure projects is shadow carbon pricing. With this tool, the cost of carbon and GHGs can be explicitly included in the project's price. A recommended approach for doing this consists of the following steps: 1 - Adequately assess the carbon footprint of the relevant infrastructure project 2 - Choose a carbon shadow price that is appropriate and aligned with the Paris Agreement 3 - Include the resulting cost of the project's carbon emissions in the valuation or cost-benefit analysis. #sustainable #business

Leveraging on PPPs for Climate-resilient Infrastructure (Part 1) There are diverse modalities of payments for PPPs. To safeguard the governments/ public from performance related risks forecast and infrastructure Payment on Availability (PoA) is an awesome approach. Climate scientists and planners of PPPs can leverage of PoA to drive climate-resilient infrastructure by linking payments to the performance and availability of assets rather than usage. This model incentivizes private partners to ensure long-term functionality, especially under climate stresses like floods, storms, and droughts. To enhance resilience, performance-based payments can be tied to climate adaptation metrics, ensuring that private partners maintain the infrastructure to withstand extreme weather. Penalties for downtime caused by climate-related events can further drive the use of resilient materials and designs. Additionally, adopting a lifecycle approach ensures private partners are motivated to maintain infrastructure that remains climate-responsive over time. Blended finance options, such as combining green bonds or climate funds with public capital, can cover the higher upfront costs of resilient infrastructure. Furthermore, risk transfer mechanisms shift climate risks to private partners, while insurance for climate events ensures that availability payments remain stable even during disruptions. To promote innovation, the private sector can be incentivized to adopt nature-based solutions and smart technologies that enhance infrastructure resilience. For example, integrating renewable energy systems or modular infrastructure designs can reduce climate vulnerability and ensure continuous availability. Governments can provide additional incentives, such as bonus payments for exceeding resilience targets or supporting sustainability-linked bonds to attract green financing. Monitoring and verification systems, such as real-time performance tracking and periodic resilience audits, ensure accountability and alignment with national climate goals. #ClimateresilientInfrastructure #PPPs #SustainableInfrastructure #sustainability
