Dear Nonprofit Leaders, As you enter your most busy season, putting the extra blood sweat and tears in to raising funds, running programs and trying to change the world, don’t forget about yourself. A lot of us in the nonprofit world do this work because of our own traumatic experiences. We fight for those experiencing homelessness because we were once without a home. We fight for injustice because we have experienced injustice. We bring healing to families because ours was broken once. We fight for nature because experienced it’s healing power but have seen it destroyed. We share hope because we’ve been hopeless. We love because we were first loved. Year end can be stressful. The holidays can be stressful. Family can be stressful. Check-in with yourself and check-in with your staff. That is all. #nonprofit #nonprofitleadership

I’ll be in silence, limiting communication to work-related emails. My focus will be on creating content and training. During this time, I won’t engage in conversations with FBS staff, clients, family, or anyone else. Why? To empathise with the experience of adults in domestic abuse situations—having a voice but being unable to use it. Two days is a mere fraction of what they endure daily. Previous challenges showed Day 1 as tolerable, but Day 2 brought feelings of isolation and frustration, where I almost vanished from others’ awareness. Six applications have been received in the last four hours for direct financial assistance totaling $11,240 to help women + their children in current crisis. You may ask what kinds of crisis single mothers in our communities are facing every day. Here is a simple snapshot: 📌 Car repair needed to get her to her job 30 minutes away. (No transportation in her community outside of urban area.) 📌 Single mother of a newborn who was admitted for two weeks due to emergency medical situation who needs rent + utilities. 📌 Surgery scheduled, out of work for 6-8 weeks, and at risk of losing home. 📌 Survivor of intimate partner abuse, raising two children and seeking assistance for housing and basic needs. It was a call to action I couldn’t ignore. The solution became clear—The Layne Project, Inc. needed to transition its services into a nonprofit model to ensure no family was left without support. With no existing provider to step in, a small yet determined board came together, and The Layne Project 4 Families www.tlp4families.org was born. Starting a nonprofit was estimated to take nearly a year, but with a committed donation of assets valued at $30,000 from The Layne Project, Inc. and the incredible support of Sharice Davids’ office, The Layne Project 4 Families (4 Families) achieved something remarkable: receiving 501(c)(3) status in just 20 days! Pawsitively Bears Day #1: The inception of Teddy Bears with Heart traces back to a personal challenge during my divorce. Faced with the dilemma of what to do with 450 bears stored in boxes that I had collected through the beanie bear craze, a conversation with a friend who happened to be a fire captain sparked the initiative. I didn't want to throw the bears away, he volunteered to take a few off of my hands. I then started thinking, who else could use bears so I started looking. I have always been one of those who "see a need, fill a need" kind of people. As TBWH grew we decided we wanted to be a non-profit. At the time it cost a lot so I did some online research and found Good Bears of the World. They have been in business since the 70s and did exactly what I wanted to do. I contacted them and they agreed to let us be a Den. Since 2008 we have given out over 200,000 stuffed animals and are gifting to first responders and other agencies in over six counties, not to mention throughout the U.S. and Internationally, when we can. The primary mission of Teddy Bears with Heart is to provide comfort to children in crisis, the forgotten elderly, and the terminally ill. Importantly, TBWH emphasizes our commitment to being a resource during times of genuine need, steering away from serving as mere Christmas gifts, prizes, or incentives.
