A friend sent me this picture of what she found in her lunch one of these days: a very nice moldy surprise. As Matt Regusci and I talked about it on this week’s episode of Don't Eat POOP! A Food Safety Podcast, some things came up that I thought are important to remind everyone of when it comes to mold: If it’s moldy, don’t eat it! Seriously, it’s not good for you even if you’re not allergic to mold. The part of the mold that's visible is only a tiny part of it. Molds have branches and roots that are like very thin threads. The roots may be difficult to see when the mold is growing on food and may be very deep in the food. This means that cutting away the “moldy” part doesn’t work. Mold spreads through spores it releases in the air, so if there’s visible mold in one piece inside an enclosed package, there’s a very high likelihood that all other pieces are moldy too, even if it’s still deep in the food and not visible yet. #FoodSafety #Food #FoodSafetyAndHygiene #MoldInFood #MoldySuprise

Have you ever wondered what tampons are made of? (If not, here’s your chance) Don’t worry! I Googled it so you wouldn’t have to 😉 The majority of tampons sold are made of cotton, rayon – a semi-synthetic fiber made from wood pulp – or a mixture of both. What we didn’t know until recently is that they also contain heavy metals, like lead and arsenic. For more valuable information on tampons tune into episode 74 of Don't Eat POOP! A Food Safety Podcast. #FoodSafety #Food #FoodSafetyAndHygiene #Tampons #HeavyMetals
