During a conversation with my learners on Friday, we delved into the significance and value of referencing. When evaluating and referencing an author's writing in your essays, it's essential to consider their background, potential biases, and body of work. These tips could help ensure the credibility and reliability of references, strengthening an overall essay. I always advise learners to seek help from our academics in the library and on the course and refer to their NOW Learning rooms—Nottingham Trent University has a great system. Date of Publication: Use recent and relevant sources, especially in rapidly evolving fields, to ensure your information is current. 4. Bias and Objectivity: Evaluate if the author has a particular agenda or bias. Use different sources to balance your argument and reduce reliance on one potentially biased perspective. 5. Purpose and Relevance: Ensure the source is relevant to your topic and contributes meaningfully to your argument. 6. Diversity of Sources: Reference various sources, including books, peer-reviewed articles, and reputable websites, to demonstrate a well-rounded understanding of the topic. 7. Consistent Referencing: To maintain the quality of your work, consistently use the correct referencing style, such as Harvard style. 8. Critical Engagement: Don’t reference the source—engage critically with it. Reflect on how the author’s arguments support or contradict your account.
