Just over a week ago, Generac was honored to host a group of students from Pewaukee High School for a career exploration experience. I was asked to give a brief presentation about my career path, my education path, share examples of projects I've have worked on, any advice I'd give to those interested in the field. It can be difficult to capture the attention of a high-school aged human (I can say that because I live with one). However, I believe I struck a chord when I said I was a college dropout. Although my path isn't the norm, and I've had to prove myself time and time again, I'm proud to be a product of my own hard work and perseverance. College isn't for everyone. I'll type that one again. College isn't for everyone. And that's okay. This industry would collapse if we didn't have people that chose a path outside of the standard four-year degree. Am I bashing higher education? Not at all. In fact, I couldn't have been more proud than when our daughter was accepted into college. Her chosen path is specific and requires a degree for her to pursue her passion. I admire those who know exactly what they want and follow the steps to get there. As for me, I'm still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. I can promise you that I will never stop learning and growing along the way as I figure it out. My advice to the group I met with was, "Whatever you choose to do, be really good at it. Better yet, be the best at it. But never get comfortable. It's those times of unease that really make you grow."
You said several things that I think have become important lessons, especially since there was so much job loss due to COVID. First, when it comes down to it, you definitely are a product of your own hard work and perseverance. Two, never, ever get too comfortable. Your life can change in the blink of an eye. Third, it's those times of unease that lead to growth. You clearly were and continue to be the captain of your destiny. Way to steer your ship!
Very well said Becky. My career path was definitely not a straight line either. My 4 year degree, which I achieved at 40, wouldn't mean nearly as much without the 20 years of work experience I had between being a college dropout and returning as an adult. One of my biggest takeaways from the bachelors degree was that there is always something new we can learn and we shouldn't be afraid that. Thanks for the great post!
I’ll second the “college isn’t for everyone”! I did not attend college, left an organization that would only accept Sr Leadership and above with a degree. I landed in a role with a fantastic company that will let me showcase my skills without that piece of paper on the wall. Thanks to Generac and my leadership for believing me.
Thank you for sharing insights about your journey and some excellent pieces of advice with the students!
Same boat sister! Never went to college but I have worked really hard to get where I am today!
Great message Becky! That is all great advice you gave them!
Becky, great advice to the group of students! You always have set and are setting a great example!
Outstanding prospective Becky!
Well done!
