😎😎😎 It's official now but you read it first in LaVanguardia last week: Spanish Socialist Party PSOE proposes VP Teresa Ribera to lead their list for the European elections on June 9th. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez wants to spearhead the defense of the Green Deal and its social pillar, and Ribera might as well become the commissioner for Spain at the next European Commission. The upcoming European elections will be tough for the governing parties in Spain but the Socialists will attempt to exploit again their stance on the risk of alliances between conservative and extreme right parties, and also confront them with their more ambiguous views on climate policies. Today EL ESPAÑOL publishes my analysis on the results of the European elections. Here are three key takeaways: 1) Low Turnout (≈50%): This indicates that Spaniards (and Europeans in general) have yet to fully grasp the crucial role the EU will play in the coming years. 2) Rise of Nationalist and Populist Right: Factors like immigration and the impact of the Green Pact have fueled significant gains for these groups, leading to a notable decline in support for Centrist and Green parties. 3) Endurance of the Centrist Coalition: The alliance between socialists, liberals, and conservatives remains the main political force, maintaining enough support to potentially secure a second term for Von der Leyen. Europe's future is on the line today More than two years of war on the continent. A public opinion more aware than five years ago of what the European Union can do for them – coordinating the purchase of vaccines, launching a major investment plan to protect their welfare, helping Ukraine defend itself against Russia and curbing its imperialist project – but at the same time, as a legacy of the pandemic, more distrustful and more polarized. The rise of the far-right. A climate of political violence not seen in decades, especially harsh in Germany. A bet on climate neutrality in the limbo. An economy that withstood COVID but is falling behind on the global stage, with the United States and China are employing strategies for which Europe is not prepared for. All these factors – coupled with the intensification of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, an issue on which the EU lacks a common stance but finds itself outside the UN consensus – compose the grave backdrop for the European Parliament elections being held today in most EU countries. A total of 373 million people are called to vote, though where it is not customary to do so on Sunday, such as in the Netherlands, Czech Republic, or Ireland, tens of millions of people have already cast their ballots. Although in almost all countries these elections are seen through an internal lens (in France, as a preview of the 2027 presidential elections in which Marine Le Pen will run; in Italy, as a referendum on Giorgia Meloni's government; in Spain, as another duel between Pedro Sánchez and Alberto Núñez Feijóo...), the results will define the responses that the EU will give to all these challenges in the coming years. As we move to the European Parliament elections, the Portuguese online newspaper Observador is very kind to publish my opinion pieces. This one is about the "fetishism of subordination" showed by Partido CHEGA (the populist right) that will have a seat in the Identity and Democracy Group, and the extreme-left in the communists of PCP, when they talk about the #EuropeanUnion. #Useyourvote #Portugal https://lnkd.in/dc8w6sKB

From Marine Le Pen in France to Geert Wilders in the Netherlands, Giorgia Meloni in Italy, and Tom van Grieken in Belgium, the leaders of the far-right are eagerly anticipating the European Parliament elections on June 9. Polls predict a historic result for them, reflecting their growing presence in national parliaments and governments (and a bit more, as this election is often considered irrelevant, leading to a larger protest vote). Yes, the extremist tide will continue to rise and gain seats in the European Parliament, but it will not become a wave and the pro European grand coalition will resist. Experience shows that, so far, extreme right parties have not been able to translate their electoral success into political influence in the European Parliament. But what will happen now, will that change? What will the political groups look like in the next European Parliament? And where will Viktor Orban's Fidesz go? Besides the rise of the extreme right, another novelty in the upcoming political cycle may be that, for the first time, the European People's Party (EPP) will have an alternative majority to its right with which to push through laws in the European Parliament, instead of teaming up with S&D (Social Democrats) and Renew (Liberals). What will that mean for the legislative process? And politically? You can read my long, detailed analysis from yesterday’s paper here. Thank you, Eric Maurice from European Policy Centre and Sophia Russack from CEPS (Centre for European Policy Studies), for the insights! https://lnkd.in/efbE9iij #europeanelections #eleccioneseuropeas #Électionseuropéennes #9j #europeanparliament #parlamentoeuropeo #parlementeuropéen #europe #europa #eu #ue #journalism #eupoliticaltrends #extremeright

In just a few days, 373 million Europeans are called to the polls to renew their representatives in the European Parliament in the largest exercise of transnational democracy in the world. The European Parliament is the only EU institution that is elected by direct suffrage and its renewal will mark the start of a new political cycle at the EU level. From the Chinese systemic competition, to the US economic decoupling and the Russian security threat, a cocktail of existential challenges awaits. We call them, for short, European elections, although technically they are the sum of 27 elections held at the national level and which generally take place according to internal political dynamics. Never, however, have the European elections been more deserving of this adjective than on this occasion. Today is one of those days that mark our history as #Europeansociety. It is up to us to decide a #future for the #nextgenerations. #UseYourVote Your vote is non-transferable. We build #democracy together. #EUelections #EuropeanParliamentElections #UsaTuVoto

📣 Have you seen the video about the #EuropeanParliamentElections? https://lnkd.in/d8TvYjVB English version: https://lnkd.in/dadsqEdY In this touching video, the #EuropeanParliament talks about what really matters: #democracy. Here are some reflections: This is a beautiful way in which the European Parliament reminds us of the great purpose of the #EuropeanUnion (EU), to build the first supranational democracy. The #EU is the result and triumph of wanting to relate to each other differently after the Second World War: in #peace, #freedom, #trust, #respect, and #WithoutViolence. A supranational structure that "forced" the European leadership to find agreement in the deepest disagreements and thus avoid a new war. As seen in the video, previous generations remind us not to take democracy for granted. They fought for our current democratic model with their lives. We must continue to build it. That is why #voting strengthens it. Thus, we understand democracy as a #EuropeanValue: "Take care of democracy when I am no longer here" #EuropeanCitizens decide, we decide, the future of the EU in the #elections to be held from 6 to 9 June, the 9th in Spain. #UseYourVote #Congratulations to the people who have worked on this project! 👏 👏 Have you seen it? What did you think? 😊 Let me know in the comments! #EUelections2024 #UsaTuVoto ... #KindReminder We have created an international structure at the European level on two levels: ✅ The Council of Europe, with 46 member states (all EU countries), is the intergovernmental organisation working to promote and protect democracy, human rights, and the rule of law on the European continent. https://lnkd.in/d6FwUZNR ✅ The European Union represents the European integration project in which the 27 countries commit themselves to cede part of the exercise of their sovereignty to create a supranational political, legal, and economic structure that allows us to face the challenges together.

The German city of Pinneberg is the third municipality to take part in the model project Climate Meets Community, in which a citizens‘ jury will be held, followed by a referendum. This was decided by the city council on 10 October with a clear majority (23:16 votes). The schedule envisages that the citizens' jury will meet as early as the first half of 2025. The topic and issues are to come from the field of ‘climate protection and/or climate adaptation’. The responsible administration and the political groups represented in the city council will specify this in the coming weeks. The 25-30 members of the citizens‘ jury will be randomly selected from the population. After hearings of experts and comprehensive discussions in several sessions, the mini-public will develop recommendations for the corresponding topics. Whether these are implemented will ultimately be decided by the entire population of Pinneberg in a referendum. All citizens are called upon to vote on some of the recommendations (max. 3-5 voting questions) of the citizens' jury. The voting date is expected to be combined with the federal election in autumn 2025. The result is binding. Steffen Krenzer, head of the Climate Meets Community project, says: ‘Pinneberg faces numerous challenges in the areas of climate protection and climate adaptation, particularly with regard to the goal of climate neutrality by 2035. Broad public support is crucial to achieving this goal. Citizen participation at an early stage can foster this support. Climate meets community shows how difficult political questions can be answered by society as a whole. The Pinneberg goal of climate neutrality by 2035 is very ambitious and can only be achieved if citizens can actively shape climate protection. Our model project makes this possible. In the citizens‘ jury, a cross-section of the population finds good solutions that are then confirmed in the referendum. This strengthens climate policy decisions, especially when they are far-reaching.’ #CitizensAssembly #KlinatrifftKommune
