NASAC is joining the global community to commemorate the World Environment Day 2024 (WED 2024) under the theme “Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience.” As the global community faces challenges of climate change and ecological degradation, the need to harmonize efforts in combating land degradation while transitioning towards low-carbon economies becomes increasingly urgent, particularly in regions like Africa where the impacts of environmental degradation are acutely felt. NASAC through its report, co-authored by The InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) and titled “Decarbonisation of Transport in Africa: Opportunities, Challenges and Policy Options,” provides recommendations on how decarbonising road transport is a vital component of mitigating climate change and improving the resilience of land-based transport systems. The NASAC-IAP report found that the decarbonisation of road transport in Africa can directly contribute to efforts to combat land degradation and enhance resilience to drought and desertification. Sustainable transport infrastructure, such as EV charging stations powered by renewable energy sources, can help reduce the need for further land conversion and infrastructure expansion, thereby preserving ecosystems and protecting against soil erosion. Additionally, promoting mixed-use and compact urban development and efficient land use planning through the application of transit-oriented development (TOD) principles can help minimize land degradation associated with urban sprawl and transportation infrastructure expansion. 🚀 Exciting news! 🌍 Interreg NEXT MED Programme approved a €83,7 million call for accelerating the green transition in the Mediterranean. This is the second call for proposals dedicated to green transition projects in the region which resulted from the recent meeting of the Monitoring Committee -Interreg NEXT MED’s decision-making body- held last week in Athens. 📍 The Monitoring Monitoring Committee members representing 15 countries agreed on a collective ambition for a more climate-resilient Mediterranean region. This commitment underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive societal and policy transformation to address the Mediterranean region’s rapid warming, which is occurring 20% faster than the global average (United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). 🎯 Expected to be launched in the second half of the year, the chosen approach extends beyond ‘traditional’ environmental issues like water management or energy efficiency, promoting sustainable solutions across a wide range of sectors to foster their green transformation. These include supporting SMEs in decarbonizing their business models, advancing innovative climate technologies, enhancing education and training on climate challenges, integrating climate goals into public policies, and preparing health systems for climate-related diseases. June 5 World Environmental day Our land. Our future. We are Generation Restoration. Each year, it adopts a specific theme to spotlight urgent environmental concerns. In 2024, the theme "Planet vs. Plastics" underscores the imperative for collaborative efforts to restore ecosystems, address climate change, and safeguard biodiversity. Every year on June 5, World Environment Day is observed across the globe to reinforce and sustain awareness around environmental action. Together, we can make a difference by adopting sustainable habits, conserving resources, and promoting eco-friendly practices. Efforts to track and reduce emissions, environmental impact and contributions to climate change are no longer rare or optional; instead, they've become the norm. The event has been led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) since its inception in 1973. In 2024, World Environment Day is being hosted by Saudi Arabia, with a focus on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience.

🌍 Did you know that nature-based solutions (NBS) could provide 37% of the cost-effective CO2 mitigation needed by 2030? Yet, they receive less than 1% of global climate finance! In my latest article for Earth.Org, I explore the economic and political challenges preventing nature-based solutions from reaching their full potential in mitigating climate risks. From restoring mangroves to reforesting critical areas, NBS offer vast opportunities but face barriers in financing and implementation. Some of my main takeaways are that 1. NBS can complement, and in some cases outperform, engineered solutions. 2. Despite their potential, nature-based solutions are underutilised due to insufficient climate finance and policy support. 3. For nature-based solutions to be fully effective, there needs to be a fundamental shift in how institutions and interdisciplinary research operate. This would ensure NBS’s integration into climate strategies through a systems-thinking approach, which balances multiple ecosystem services and accounts for diverse stakeholder needs. A few weeks back, I had the pleasure of joning a Financial Services Council New Zealand #climate kōrero. Whilst the discussion focussed mainly on Aotearoa #NewZealand’s mandatory #ClimateDisclosure regime, the somewhat unofficial launch of the #Government’s climate strategy (available here: https://lnkd.in/gcAmwVkU), and the imminent release of Aotearoa New Zealand’s second #EmissionsReductionPlan (#ERP2 now available for comment here: https://lnkd.in/gZ5XbiSM) set the scene for a much broader discussion. As part of the kōrero, I took the opportunity to reiterate the need for long-term, cross-sector direction setting by #government to tackle an issue as #complex and enduring as #ClimateChange, as well as the importance of looking at both #adaptation *and* #mitigation interventions, given that reducing carbon emissions can enable greater #resilience, and that critically, the converse is often also true. I used our recent work on climate scenarios for the #transport sector (available here: https://lnkd.in/gHi23Ani) to illustrate this, wherein we explored a future where continued #investment in a more diffuse and distributed, road-focussed transport system creates greater exposure to more severe and long-lasting physical climate impacts, further exacerbating our existing infrastructure funding deficit.
