The popularity of veganism has grown by 300% in the last 15 years! The vegan food market in the US is booming, with a growth rate of 9.6%. On my recent trip to Amsterdam, every vegan restaurant was bustling and required advance bookings. Meanwhile, sustainable fashion is on the rise, growing at 8.4%. The secondhand market for clothes is expanding five times faster than the overall retail market. According to the UK Office for National Statistics, 35% of UK consumers are buying fewer clothes. This shift is driven by Millennials and Gen Z, who are committed to leading more ethical lives. Although many brands have signed the Fashion Pact to reduce their impact, none have publicly committed to producing less year on year. It's only a matter of time before Millennials to Gen Alpha see through these feeble attempts. Imagine if extended producer responsibility became mandatory. What if repurposing used clothes was a requirement? What if "local for local" became the expectation of customers? Can your company redefine fashion? Can you tap into the abundance of used clothes or the wealth of seamstress skills in your market? Can you leverage technologies to redefine fashion and embrace abundance rather than perpetuate non-existent scarcity? Sustainable fashion is just a placeholder, waiting for the real truth to unravel. 🍫 Can 'Clean Label' Imitation Brands Ultimately Be Successful? The latest Market Shake by GourmetPro newsletter has a great piece on the rise of healthier & more sustainable chocolate brands. With some of these new chocolate brands imitating the packaging of mainstream competitors - while offering a healthier & more sustainable choice. The newsletter discusses the the potential benefits and challenges of this approach. From an international competitive perspective, my POV is that brands should think twice (and maybe thrice) before taking this route. For a few reasons: 1️⃣ BORROWED INTEREST IS NOT BUILDING EQUITY: While your packaging may evoke the feelings and emotions of the competitor brand - it doesn't create strong brand salience and recognition at the shelf to give you a point of difference. Yes you look like them - and they may even check you out - but the job you're mainly doing is to constantly re-enforcing the competitor brand by way of comparison. Essentially you're contributing to their brand building efforts - instead of creating your own. 2️⃣ IMITATION BRANDS WORK BEST FOR PRIVATE LABEL KNOCK OFFS: But at least they'll then try you right? That may work if you're one of the many knock-off/private label brands in the F&B market that are looking to leverage their competitor's brand appeal and then offer a cheaper price instead. (Watch this case study video https://bit.ly/42MkJwm on how Aldi creates imitation brands) But for more expensive, clean-label brands this is rarely a good outcome because - despite the fact that you many have better & more sustainable ingredients - most consumers will revert to the lower-priced original. You're setting up a comparison that you just can't win because it's on the competitor's terms - not yours. 3️⃣ NEW HEALTHIER OPTIONS SHOULD CREATE DISTINCTIVE BRAND ASSETS: While it's tempting to replicate the look of big brands, as the newsletter points out, bigger brands have much bigger budgets. You're never going to win that branding battle. But what we can steal from them is the consumption moment - and their customers - by offering a similar/premium product profile with a better, healthier alternative. So many new brands in 'healthier for you' F&B categories - like OATSIDE oat milk, poppi healthy soda, Pop Corner healthier snacks and Pana Organic sustainable chocolate bars - are giving people a premium & indulgent upgrade that's usually better for you and the planet. And to help re-enforce this positioning & drive growth they've ALL worked hard to create distinctive brand and packaging that makes them stand out from the crowd by building their own brand identity. The rebrand that took down dairy. 🐄 Oatly has THE BEST rebrand, positioning, and marketing story out there and you can't convince me otherwise. Oatly went from "what in the world is oat milk" and barely capturing a portion of the 15% plant-based market, to being an adored Internationally-recognized name. My friend even dressed up as an Oatly milk carton for Halloween. True story. And hey, there's a lot to learn from this unassuming oat milk brand. ↓ 🤝 #1. BE HUMAN 🤝 Their entire footprint, on and offline, is conversational, youthful, and approachable. Reminder: Meet your audience exactly where they are. ✨ #2. DIFFERENTIATION ✨ The plant-based market is only growing. So Oatly transformed their old, bland packaging into bold, block, and bubble letters. The lesson: In a competitive market, go bold. 👂 #3. EAR TO THE GROUND 👂 Oatly experienced rapid growth and expanded its reach internationally. No one knew what oat milk was, so they leaned into education across cultures, changing packaging to reflect the local language. Take note: Listen, then act. 🔁 #4. KEEP IT CONSISTENT 🔁 Even on a shoestring budget, Oatly sees the big picture—their new visual identity is pure gold and will translate perfectly online as well. They turned every inch of their packaging into a hard-working, eyeball-catching powerhouse, then captured that same aesthetic across their social media and online footprint. Seeing inspiring and leading brands like allplants | B Corp™ collapse is a wake-up call. Purpose-driven brands can’t thrive without consumers who believe in their mission and take action🤝.
