Moved by Robin Kannattu Thomas's grandfather's struggles with lower-limb disabilities, Vishnu Sankar, Jithin Vidya Ajith, Alex M Sunny, and Robin Kanattu Thomas — engineering graduates from Vimal Jyothi Engineering College, Kannur — set out to make a difference. In 2018, they founded Astrek innovations, a startup focused on tackling mobility challenges. Their flagship product, Unik Exo, is a cutting-edge wearable device that integrates robotics, machine learning, and motion capture technology to enhance mobility for individuals with lower-limb disabilities. "We wanted to create a device that could empower people with disabilities and improve their quality of life," Jithin told Open Digest. After years of rigorous research and development, Unik Exo is now undergoing clinical trials at various hospitals across the country. This adaptable device, powered by a sophisticated machine learning algorithm, customizes its movements to suit individual needs. A new development in the bioengineering community is the WalkON, a pair of robotic shorts that enhance walking abilities for elderly people as it assists hip flexion. The journal “Soft robotic shorts improve outdoor walking efficiency in older adults” published in Nature discusses their product and the research that went behind it. Like prosthetics, which aim to restore lost functionality in limbs, the WalkON serves a similar purpose by enhancing physical abilities by compensating for weakened muscles that come with age. It does this by using a “tendon driven design” that utilizes natural leg movement to assist the legs movement. This promotes independence of individuals as they are able to regain control over their legs. Soft robotics emphasize flexibility and adaptability as they conform to the human body. This type of technology has the potential to improve mobility for older individuals while advancing wearable biomedical devices. “We wanted to build something that would be genuinely useful to our families," say Rahi Shah and Hriday Boriawala, two Class 12 students from Mumbai. Inspired by their grandmothers' struggles with mobility, the duo developed Walkfit — a walking stick attachment designed to prevent falls among the elderly. Using AI and pressure sensors, Walkfit tracks weight distribution and detects imbalance in real-time. The device easily attaches to any standard walking stick, providing alerts about potential falls. “We measure how much of the user’s weight is being supported by the stick; based on that, we predict the likelihood of a fall,” explains Rahi. Bluetooth-enabled, Walkfit generates heat maps to help caregivers and physiotherapists understand mobility issues better. With plans to integrate it with a mobile app for remote monitoring, the teens hope their innovation will "prevent other grandparents from facing the issues (theirs) did." Tested with over 50 seniors and validated by physiotherapists, Walkfit has earned recognition at IIT Bombay’s Techfest and international STEM competitions.
