Prof. Tina Seelig who teaches Innovation & Entrepreneurship at Stanford University, shares her findings spanning over two decades, of how some people are more 'lucky' than others (or how some seem to attract success to themselves, more than others). She articulates three (3) important reasons: - Be willing to take some small risks - Be appreciative and show gratitude to those that have helped you along your journey - Re-consider / re-look at ideas (that may have seemed bad or terrible ideas) from the lens possibilities While fully agreeing with all these three reasons, I believe there are three other reasons, that can complement this list: - Remaining positive and believe in yourself (picture your future success): Regularly create 'mental imagery' of your 'successful future'. Let those positive images continue to motivate you to 'persevere' towards your goal(s) - Build your professional network: Your opportunities are going to come from people you know. So strategically invest in broadening in your professional network. A few months ago, we posted: "Innovators are creators of change. They are everyday people who want to have an impact and are willing to take small ideas, to take the risk, to try, to fail, and to learn. Being an innovator is not about waiting for the one big idea that might never come..." Simone Giertz is a great example of this. She sees a problem and invents some sort of solution to it. They are not always great ideas, and in fact, she herself says she invents 'useless things.' However, out of this, she has created a successful business and YouTube channel with over two million subscribers. She says, 'The true beauty of making useless things [is] this acknowledgment that you don't always know what the best answer is. It turns off that voice in your head that tells you that you know exactly how the world works. Building, Improving, and Executing - these are more than just words to me. They represent a philosophy that has helped me grow both personally and professionally. Building involves making mistakes, getting messy, and sometimes feeling like a small child trying to construct something for the first time. But don't let that discourage you. Seek out experts and be open to new ideas to build better. Improvement is about focusing on getting just 1% better every day. It's not easy, but habits start to compound like interest over time. Positive self-talk is key, and I'm here to help you stay motivated. Execution is where the rubber meets the road. Ideas are great, but they mean nothing if you don't take action. Even if your first attempt is clunky, you can always go back and improve it. But if you never execute, you'll always wonder "what if?" Don't get stuck.
