I was guessing… I got my first Commander’s Climate Assessment results back… But I didn’t know what I could do that would help my 211 person squadron the most. The assessment was supposed to help me know how to improve my new squadron’s culture and climate… I knew I couldn’t try to fix everything as a new commander… But what could we focus on to have the most impact? 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝: 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐒𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 After years of leading teams in the armed forces, I’ve come to appreciate how the principles of military leadership can profoundly impact the corporate world. Transitioning from military service to the boardroom, I've realized that the core values of discipline, resilience, and strategic thinking are just as critical in business as they are in defence. Here are a few lessons that continue to guide me: 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: In both military operations and business, crises are inevitable. Leading through uncertainty requires quick, decisive action while maintaining focus on long-term stability. 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧: Just like military campaigns, business success is rooted in long-term planning. Analyzing data and anticipating market trends help ensure not just survival, but sustained growth. 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: These aren’t just buzzwords—they are the foundation of high-performing teams. In any organization, fostering a culture of ownership and responsibility drives results and innovation. 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐬: In both the military and business, no success is achieved alone. The Air Force will stand up the new Integrated Capabilities Command (ICC) by the end of 2024, per Gen. Allvin. The command will be led by a three-star and its personnel will be pulled from other commands, with the goal of improving the "capability development process that Allvin described as “diffused and fragmented”. Questions remain- who will be selected to lead the ICC? What commands will its staff be pulled from? Where will it be based?
