Today was the second day of the Bright Network Finance, Professional Services, and Consulting Internship, and here are my key takeaways:
We began with an inspiring keynote from Laura Tye, Legal Director at Clyde & Co. Laura's journey from Dubai to London highlighted the importance of resilience and seizing opportunities: "There's no such thing as being overprepared in your career, especially in the beginning." She emphasised embracing resilience, avoiding complacency and the importance of flexibility; careers evolve.
I then listened to six different sector specialists:
Kate Reynolds, Student Recruitment Senior Manager at PwC, emphasised PwC’s commitment to delivering exceptional value across various services. Her journey from struggling with A-levels to pursuing economics was particularly inspiring.
The second specialist sector talk was by Emma Goodall, Consultant at IBM, who shared her path from associate to complex delivery leader, highlighting the importance of continuous inquiry, analysis, resilience, curiosity, and adaptability in consulting.
We were then joined by Emmalyn Amoako Baffoe and Andjela Djukanovic from KPMG who explained auditing and the skills necessary for providing quality solutions to clients.
Then, Emma Russell from Forvis Mazars Group provided valuable insights into the hiring and interview process, emphasising the use of the STAR method to stand out in interviews.
Next, Chris Hare, Senior European Economist at HSBC, gave a comprehensive overview of the current economic climate and discussed career opportunities at HSBC.
The concluding sector session featured an insider's guide to insurance presented by Matthew Wilson from Hiscox. He covered different types of insurance, industry roles, and real-life insurance scenarios, offering valuable insights.
After the break, I had face to face networking sessions with professionals from various companies. The Deloitte panel, featuring Kiran Sandhu, Lyka Q. and Chris Do discussed their recruitment process, company culture, and personal experiences. The EY panel, with Curtis Isaac Mparutsa, Sophia B. and Sean Farrell shared their experiences and working environment. I was able to ask them lots of interesting questions and build connections.
I concluded the day with a work sample session led by Fareeha Adnan, Senior Associate at PwC. She provided further insights into the audit field, building on the earlier workshops, which helped me better understand the sector. It was an engaging and fun way to wrap up the day. I was then given my assignment to finish by the end of the internship, which includes joining a fictional PwC audit team working on a sustainable food supplier. The project consists of researching the client and their industry, reviewing financial reports to calculate materiality, and conducting stock counts and audit procedures.
Looking forward to the remaining days of this enriching experience! #IEUK24 ⌨️
