As I think about the driving forces that have shaped the progress of all people in the 20 th Century forward, I see that the work of my cousin Gordon Blaine Hancock(Director of the “Durham Manifesto” and the other Founders), has been and is paramount in the development of equality and diversity in America. I would like to pose the question “Would John Glen have been able to successfully make his first space flight without the work and progress of Cousin Gordon Blaine Hancock and Cousin Congressman John Lewis “? If you haven't had a chance yet, I recommend reading Colin Williams' article on the shortcomings—and outright failures—of DEIA initiatives at Pittsburgh-based cultural institutions. This article flew under the radar last week, which is a shame because it's a topic that warrants wider attention, awareness, and action. One major shortcoming I've noticed with DEIA practices, at least in some of the organizations where I've worked, is that they are most often housed within human resource departments where change is tectonically slow and the status quo is almost always upheld. Instituting real and lasting change is a monumental undertaking that rarely has enough internal support to succeed. There are, without a doubt, motivated people doing great work in this city, but the inherent challenge is whether they can create a fairer workplace before burnout or exhaustion sets in. Not to mention, a deeply entrenched gatekeeper mentality exists at so many of the city's arts organizations. Not only is this mentality antithetical to the progress of DEIA practices, it threatens the overall health of what should be a rich, thriving, innovative, and inclusive arts ecosystem in the city. https://lnkd.in/e6_mXC39
