𝘋𝑜 𝑤𝘦 𝘯𝑒𝘦𝑑 𝑡𝘳𝑎𝘯𝑠𝘭𝑎𝘵𝑖𝘰𝑛’𝑠 𝑔𝘳𝑎𝘥𝑒𝘴? The various stakeholders of a translation service or product may have a different understanding of how to define a translation, and what the translation process entails. In this sense, an agreement on translation categories could be a useful tool for the pre-production discussion between a requester and a provider of a translation service to clarify and align expectations. But how shall these categories be named and defined? That is the question that FIT Research Taskforce was asked to discuss. And it was a tough discussion, as we wanted these categories to respect all stakeholders of the translation service. Yesterday I let my frustrations out regarding translation/writing tests. Many of you have seen it and answered it (thank you for that, by the way), and you gave some piece of worthy advice that I feel like I must share now. As a sum from what I have read yesterday, there are some good reasons why a translator should not do a test, especially when the person has many years of experience. So let’s dive in the world of translation/writing tests. ⁉️ UNPAID TRANSLATION/WRITING TESTS: TO DO OR NOT TO DO? ✅ YES! - If you are new in the market and don’t have much experience - If you still don’t have a set of projects (translation or writing) that can prove your experience ❌ NO! - If you are an experienced freelancer and have proof enough to show that you don’t need to do a test. And why not? Because you have many things to do and your unpaid time is very worthy to be spent with a test, especially if it’s timed and has a deadline. NOTE: you can still do whatever it feels right to you. This is not mandatory for everyone. ✅ If you SAY YES to do the test… ➕ Prevent from having preferential corrections - If you don’t have specific instructions on what to do, ask for them. This can avoid the preferential corrections. - Ask for preferential terms that you are expected to use. ➕ If still they don’t provide you with enough information - Do a quick research on the client. If it’s an agency, try to know which clients they work with, what are their typical projects and what services they offer. ➕ Choose your specialization - Don’t accept tests that are out of your specialization. Sometimes companies do this to trick you. Ask them to provide a test of your area of specialization. ❌ If you SAY NO to the test… - Prepare a set of samples with 200-300 words that can prove your work (accompanied with a note explaining that this is just a sample and that you would later follow their clients’ termbase and instructions). - Explain you only do tests if you are paid, because you are leaving projects behind to do the test. - Eventually send some recommendation letters. Translation Services Pricing Guide One of the first things you’ll want to ask your translation company is what units they use for pricing. For instance, your translation company might charge by word, by character, by hour, by page, or use a flat fee. I received a potential offer for translation services at the rate of $0.06 per word. After not so careful consideration, I decided to reject this offer for several reasons: Market Standards: The rate of $0.06 per word is significantly below the industry average for professional translation services. Most reputable translators charge between $0.10 to $0.20 per word, depending on the complexity and subject matter of the text. Quality of Work: Delivering high-quality translations requires time, expertise, and attention to detail. Accepting such a low rate would compromise the quality of my work, as it would necessitate taking on more projects just to make a reasonable income, leaving less time for thorough research and careful translation. Experience and Skills: My years of experience and specialization in certain fields warrant a fair compensation. The proposed rate does not reflect the value of my skills and expertise. Sustainability: Accepting low-paying jobs can set a precedent that undermines the value of professional translators as a whole, leading to unsustainable rates within the industry. Administrative Costs: Translation is not just about converting text from one language to another; it also involves project management, communication with clients, and sometimes additional services like proofreading and formatting. The suggested rate does not cover these essential aspects. Therefore, I believe it’s in the best interest of both my professional standards and the broader translation industry to decline offers that do not adequately compensate for the quality and effort required.

Which feature is more valuable in translation, faithfulness or creativity? 🤔 I definitely go for creativity! 🎨 💎 One of the things I enjoy most about my job as a translator is building the sentences as if they were art pieces, choosing among the infinite linguistic resources and options, and then redoing any part of them that might not look as beautiful after a while. 💎 I believe that people who are specially talented or sensitive for Arts are also gifted for translation. Most translators I've known are related to the world of Arts in some way or another, or are artists themselves. I include myself within this group, because I am a poet and a musician. I appreciate very much the chance to develop creativity that I find in my work. 💎 The article I share below mentions art, style, mental connectivity, subtle vision, and branding as 5 ways we translators have to be creative.
