After 10 years of owning a self-built e- bike, thoughts for the e-car industry: keep it simple, cheap and modular, like a kit car, and lightweight (less than 3 fatbikes). My bike has gradually been upgraded with dog basket, off-road tyres and recently got a new back-lit LCD screen, 250W motor is fine, 0.5 kWh battery replaced. The car industry needs to electrify and is doing so. But would it not be best if one could buy/rent charged range extender (RE) packs? Standardized by the #EuropeanUnion? It turns out that NIO is already on the case of this multi-billion € business adventure.... Benefits are: 1 Standardization of batteries decouples the e-car's value (partially) from the battery. The e-car without RE battery will be lighter and still manage to do 4x the NL daily average use. Both e-car and RE batteries are easier to replace/repair and recycle separately. 2 a real "green growth" opportunity for Shell, BP, Exon etc to get into battery rental business and therefore CO2 reduction. 3 Battery rental companies can charge the battery when low-cost (= solar) energy is available. 4 Competition on price, replacement time and performance of standard RE batteries could be a differentiator, promoted for example by Formula 1 or E. How large needs a RE battery to be? I would estimate about 40 kWh (~250 kg) next to a built-in capacity of 20 kWh (~120 kg). Good for roughly 250 km and 125 km, that is in the NL 8x and 4x the average daily drive. For now my old petrol car is sold. My e-bike (0.5 kWh) is my pride and joy! Any ideas on this? I have some supporting estimates and 2 videos below 👇.

Another great piece on how anyone can affordably, safely convert any bike to an E-bike with a UL certified system: "E-bikes are having a moment. Last year, 18 percent of all bike sales in the United States were electric, roughly 1 million bikes. E-bikes’ ease, range and power make them an ideal replacement for car trips: A 2023 study by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado found e-bike trips substituted for cars 34 percent of the time, and at a fraction of the cost, for low-income residents who received one. A 20-mile daily workday commute on an e-bike costs about $20 annually in electricity." But the price of e-bikes remains out of reach for many. They start at around $1,000 and cargo bikes easily exceed $6,000." #equity #health #electrifyeverything https://lnkd.in/epQE8Ruy

Despite ranging from $1,000 to $15,000, the global e-bike market was valued at $37.47 billion in 2022. This significant growth highlights the increasing demand for eco-friendly transportation alternatives. E-bikes offer numerous benefits, such as zero emissions, low-impact exercise, and the ability to navigate through traffic efficiently. These modern two-wheelers provide a sustainable transportation option while offering convenience and health benefits. Their ability to reduce air pollution and combat climate change makes them an attractive choice for environmentally conscious individuals. The cost of e-bikes is driven by their high-quality components, including advanced batteries and motors. Royal Enfield electric bike spotted ahead of November 4 debut https://ift.tt/qcTDPY6 Ahead of its November 4 debut, the Royal Enfield electric bike (rumoured to be christened the Flying Flea) has been spotted being ridden around in Europe. While there are a lot of interesting details visible about the bike, this particular unit still appears to be close to production ready. Same LED headlight as ICE Royal Enfield bikes Swathes of aluminium all across the bike Tyres appear to be quite skinny, hinting that it won’t be very powerful Royal Enfield electric bike: what can be seen? Where most of today’s electric bikes have an angular, sharp and futuristic design, Royal Enfield has stuck to its roots and its EV has a neo-retro aesthetic. The girder fork is an anomaly in today’s two-wheeler market which is dominated by telescopic units (both RSU and USD units). This choice of front suspension should lend the Royal Enfield electric bike some uniqe-ness of its own, not just in terms of design but also riding experience. The front suspension and most of the metal visible on the RE electric bike appears to be aluminium. This extensive use of aluminium will bring weight benefits, but it certainly points to the fact that this particular Royal Enfield won’t be a very budget-conscious product. While the battery and motor details are still shrouded in mystery, it does share some basic parts with the petrol-powered Royal Enfield bikes. These include the same round LED headlight, indicators, chrome mirrors and brake levers, which will be adjustable. A fluid reservoir visible on the left hand side of the handlebar indicates that the rear brake will be hand-operated like a scooter and there are likely to be no foot controls for braking. While this particular test bike doesn’t have a pillion seat, we can discern passenger footpegs and the design patent for this bike also showed a saree guard, which means that the bike will have some accommodations for ferrying a passenger around. Also See: Royal Enfield electric bike design revealed in patent images Tyres on the Royal Enfield electric bike also appear to be quite skinny, indicating that this won’t be a very powerful machine and will be rather geared toward urban riding. While it's likely to not be geared toward outright power, as is the case with EVs, the abundant torque should make it pretty zippy. The official reveal of the Royal Enfield electric bike is not too far away now so stay plugged in for the latest developments on this front.
