Blog by Thomas Schmidberger from KUKA Automation for a sustainable Battery Production Challenges and opportunities of decarbonization Decarbonization – the switch from fossil fuels to CO2-neutral and renewable energy sources – is inevitable. And this must affect all sectors and industries, not just the automotive industry. This is because fossil fuels currently account for only about half of the world’s oil consumption and less than 15 percent of total consumption. TRUCK NEWS - Game changing hydrogen cleantech reduces the worst carbon emissions by 91% An independent 18-month trial* of Advanced Hydrogen Technologies Group (AHT's) carbon capture device has reported significantly lower emissions from a fleet of Abels Moving Services’ diesel lorry exhausts. During the in-depth study involving Abels’ HGVs, control vehicles averaged a particulate number count of 116,300 cm³ while identical trucks fitted with AHT’s carbon capture device peaked at just 10,030 cm³ – a reduction of 91.4 % and more than 10 times less! Mark Costa-Rising, Chief Commercial Officer at Abels Moving Services’ parent company, AGM Group: said: “We’re delighted with the results and utilising this technology on our vehicles going forward will give us real partnership leverage when it comes to proving ESG compliance and reduction of our carbon output. With the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive set to become even more stringent from January 2024, it will also give us tangible benefits in our social, environmental and financial reporting and put us at the forefront of sustainability performance.” From December 2023 - https://lnkd.in/dP3d6N6n Abels Moving Services Volvo Trucks DAF Trucks UK MAN Truck & Bus UK Scania UK Mercedes-Benz Trucks UK

In a world that is stimulated by sustainability alternatives and has its focus on enhancing renewable resources, Japan has surprised the world with innovative inventions that not only does it outclasse hydrogen, but electric vehicles as well. Japan’s engine perceived to be fuel-less gives the impression that it is 1000 times more powerful than Electrical vehicles. This revolutionary fuel-less engine innovation eradicates the need to utilise traditional fuels. This unique invention goes beyond hydrogen and EVs. Hydrogen-powered vehicles, although highly recommended, still face challenges such as limited infrastructure, high costs when it comes to production and energy deficiency. EVs face environmental and resource constraints. On the other hand, this new engine surpasses all these limitations by utilising technologies, and materials advanced in a way that promotes power generation through quantum-based processes. What is even more appealing about this engine is that it does not need refuelling or recharging. Mazda’s research team confirms that the engine can produce energy 1000 times more. An example of Mazda’s fuel-less engine is the rotatory engine. It is an engine with a distinctive design, the rotary engine produces power by spinning a triangular rotor. What this means is that the company intends to charge the onboard batteries of future hybrid powertrains using rotary engines as generators. Mazda is taking responsibility to ensure it replaces the traditional fuel with a fuel-less engine that promotes sustainable energy. The automotive industry could be altered with this new fuel-less engine. This of course will have its fair share on the global market businesses and if adopted widely, fuel-less engines have the potential to reduce dependency on oil and lithium, and perhaps replace them too. The production costs of this type of engine are less, therefore, if it is to be adopted worldwide there is a higher chance that vehicles will become more affordable over time. https://lnkd.in/gjgbiPq4

The Multifaceted Future of Sustainable Commercial Transportation: In a rapidly evolving transportation sector, MAHLE is positioning itself at the forefront of sustainable innovation, offering a diverse range of technologies to address the complex challenges of decarbonizing commercial vehicles. At a recent technology event in Stuttgart, MAHLE's Chairman and CEO, Arnd Franz, emphasized the importance of technological diversity in achieving rapid decarbonization in the global transportation and commercial vehicle sector. MAHLE's approach encompasses a broad spectrum of solutions, including components and systems expertise for battery electric drives, hydrogen engines, fuel cells, and the use of renewable fuels. This strategy aligns with industry forecasts suggesting that by 2035, purely electric trucks with batteries and fuel cell trucks will account for approximately 30% of global production, while internal combustion engines will continue to play a significant role. Key Technological Advancements: 1. The MAHLE SCT (Superior Continuous Torque) electric motor, designed for heavy-duty traffic in all-electric trucks and fuel cell applications. 2. A heavy-duty e-axle integrating two SCT electric motors with a total output of 520 kW. 3. An innovative evaporative cooling device for fuel cells, offering up to 50 kW more cooling capacity in a given installation space. 4. Involvement in major hydrogen engine projects and development of fuel cell vehicles. MAHLE's commitment to technological diversity is evident in its participation in all current electrified truck launches and its supply of components to over 120 international commercial vehicle brands in both on- and off-highway sectors. Industry Implications: 1. Infrastructure Development: The need for expanded charging and refueling facilities to support zero-emission vehicles. 2. Economic Viability: The importance of creating a framework that makes investing in emission-free vehicles economically sensible for users. 3. Policy Support: The call for legislators to promote renewable energy sources through market-based instruments rather than prescriptive technological regulations. 4. Alternative Fuels: The potential of synthetic and biofuels to contribute to carbon emission reduction in the transportation sector. As the commercial vehicle segment accounts for about one-fifth of MAHLE's original equipment business, with expectations of strong growth particularly in China, the company's diverse technological approach positions it well to capitalize on emerging market trends. Industry professionals are encouraged to engage in discussions about the most effective pathways to decarbonize the commercial transportation sector. Share your thoughts on the balance between technological innovation, infrastructure development, and policy support needed to drive this transition. #Hydrogen #TheHydrogenNetwork #THN #SustainableTransport #CleanEnergy #ElectricVehicles #FuelCells #CommercialVehicles

As the world transitions to renewable energy, the automobile industry is exploring innovative technologies to support green energy. Photovoltaic technology is gaining significant attention, with Aptera Motors leading the charge. Their new photovoltaic vehicle runs on a hybrid system of solar and electricity, eliminating fossil fuels entirely. The car can travel up to 40 miles daily on solar power alone and up to 1,000 miles on a single electric charge. Priced at $35,000, it is more affordable than current hybrid and electric cars, making it a major milestone in alternative technology. Aptera Motors is crowd-funding to build a mass-production facility in Carlsbad, having raised $33 million through their Accelerator Program and over $100 million from crowd-funding. This innovation could pave the way for a new era of sustainable transportation, resonating with environmentally-conscious consumers and challenging the dominance of internal combustion engines.

📣 Pleased to share that Siemens Energy in partnership with Net Zero Technology Centre have once again proven methanol as a viable alternative fuel by successfully operating the SGT-A35 gas turbine on methanol at RWG (Repair & Overhauls) test facility in Aberdeen. ⏫ The demonstration builds on last year’s world’s first bio-methanol demonstration on an SGT-A20 and scaled the technology to the larger SGT-A35 gas turbine. 🌱 The use of methanol could play a key role in reducing emissions in power generation. Methanol can be made from various feedstocks where renewable methanol can cut CO2 emissions by up to 95%. Methanol, in all its forms, reduces other emissions including NOx, PM, SO2 and smoke. The demonstration test showed a decrease in NOx of up to 80%. Not to mention the ease of transportation and distribution of methanol due to the existing global supply chain making it well positioned to be a part of the future fuel mix. 🤝 This demonstration was built on collaboration and partnership to advance technology developments for sustainable energy. I was proud to be a part of this project and big thanks and congratulations to all the team involved! Dr.-Ing.
