October is Domestic Violence Awareness month here in the United States. While SBPAS, Inc is small, the reach we have is astounding with respect to the number of clients that we have and the families that we assist.
This October, considering donating to ANY smaller nonprofit or ANY local shelter rather than to the larger organizations. Here are just a few reasons why:
1. Smaller organizations and shelters do not get the amount of funding that larger more well known organizations get. We are largely overlooked.
2. Your local organizations and shelters need help! Sure donating to national organizations is great, but it’s the smaller ones that are struggling to remain open and active.
3. Donations don’t have to be monetary. Donate your time. Donate old clothing. Donate food, toys and hygiene products.
I founded SBPAS, Inc from the bedroom of my abusive home while planning my own escape. When I finally got out, I was in shelter for 6 weeks and struggled to rebuild my life. That’s when it hit me - there was a void. I was in an amazing shelter and they helped me with everything, well, everything EXCEPT family law help for my divorce and custody. I was able to get a protection order, housing, clothing, and essentials for our new home - but there was nothing they could do to help me battle an abusive ex that was targeting our child. I fought that battle alone. It changed my life forever. I went back to school and graduated summa cum laude with my eyes set on law school and becoming an attorney. While I’m not an attorney yet, I am a nationally recognized and award winning domestic violence and legal advocate, an experienced paralegal registered with the ABA and NALA, and have even been called for expert testimony. I’ve written articles and provided training to legal professionals.
The reality is, my area doesn’t have legal aid, while there is an organization that provides it for my county and 12 other counties, I have referred 73 cases to them in the last 12 months and they have taken ZERO. Each time my clients hear that they can’t accept a complicated case, that it would be different if it weren’t so complex. Family court with an abusive party is anything but simple. Victims, men and women alike, are losing custody of their children at a startling rate.
SBPAS provides services in the void. We offer legal skills workshops to help those in this area represent themselves when legal aid refuses them, we provide direct legal advocacy, we provide curriculums and training to legal professionals and created Survivor Link. A nationwide peer support program that links victims and survivors so they don’t have to attend hearings alone.
If you feel the urge to donate this October, find your smaller organizations and your local shelters. Trust me, we need your help!
