🌍 Navigating Crisis: Lessons from Engineering & Marine Industries 🌍 In my experience with Allied Engineering & Services (Pvt.) Ltd. (Caterpillar Inc.) and Seamax Marine Services (Damen) , I’ve learned that crises can strike at any time, whether it’s a technical issue with heavy machinery or a complex marine operation. Effective crisis management is not just about reacting but proactively preparing and adapting to challenges. This Relational Model of Crisis Management resonates with my approach to handling these situations: 1. Pre-Crisis Management Robust Planning: At Caterpillar, we developed detailed systems and manuals for every conceivable equipment failure, ensuring we were always ready to respond. Simulations & Drills: Regular training sessions helped our teams stay prepared for any technical or operational issue. 2. Crisis Preparedness Vigilant Monitoring: In both engineering and marine sectors, we continuously monitored operations, identifying risks early and addressing them before they could escalate. 3. Crisis Management Swift Response: Whether it was a machinery breakdown at a critical site or a salvage operation at SeaMax, rapid and effective response was key to minimizing impact. 4. Post-Crisis Management Learning & Adapting: Every challenge was a learning experience. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐠𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 One of the most frustrating challenges I've encountered in the workplace, particularly in high-risk environments like offshore operations, is 𝒑𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒍𝒆'𝒔 𝒊𝒈𝒏𝒐𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒓𝒆𝒈𝒂𝒓𝒅 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒐𝒏 𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒆. Despite all the safety protocols, procedures, and training, it’s surprising how often these basic principles are overlooked. Common sense, in many ways, should be the foundation of our decisions—especially in environments where safety is critical. Yet, there are instances when simple rules are ignored, putting both the individual and the team at risk. Whether it’s skipping essential safety steps or disregarding operational guidelines, this behaviour often leads to unnecessary complications, accidents, or inefficiency. It’s not just about training people on procedures; it's about fostering a mindset where 𝒂𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔, 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒑𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒐𝒏 𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒆 are prioritized in every action we take. Ignorance isn't always about the lack of knowledge—sometimes, it's about choosing not to apply what’s already known. To drive real change, we need to emphasize 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒐𝒖𝒔 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈, 𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒏 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒂𝒄𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚, ensuring that everyone on the team understands the importance of not just following the rules but applying logic and foresight to every situation. One thing I have come to realization is the importance when it comes to Leadership Skills among Marine Engineers- Because effective leadership skills are crucial to the success of their projects and the safety of their crew. Marine Engineers are responsible for the design, construction, and maintenance of ships, offshore platforms, and other marine vessels, and they must be able to lead and manage a team of professionals to achieve these goals. Strong leadership skills enable Marine Engineers to communicate effectively with their team members, stakeholders, and clients, ensuring that projects are completed efficiently and to a high standard. Leadership skills also allow them to make informed decisions in high-pressure situations, such as during emergency repairs or navigation crises. Moreover, leadership skills help Marine Engineers to manage conflicts and resolve disputes, promoting a positive and productive work environment. Furthermore, effective leadership can also enhance the reputation of the organization and improve morale among team members. In the marine industry, where safety is paramount, strong leadership skills can literally mean the difference between life and death. By possessing excellent leadership skills, Marine Engineers can inspire confidence in their crew, promote a culture of safety, and ensure that projects are completed successfully.

15 people lost…. in a preventable incident. Texas City overfill incident should act as a reminder to us about how we conduct ourselves. If we do not learn from what was shared we are doomed to repeat history. So what is there to learn from BP Texas City? "There are the obvious things: 👉 Maintain your instruments 👉 If it is physically possible then assume it would happen and plan for it 👉 Justifying an old design which is not inherently safe can make a bad situation much worse 👉 Do people really need to be close to the hazard?" However there are an abundance of other things which Texas City taught us. "It taught me: 👉 Mergers and acquisitions have the potential to impact process safety performance significantly 👉 Process safety incidents are not single cause and there were so many different systems in place which could have prevented this incident 👉 What you tolerate as a leader will become your maximum safety standard so be careful what you walk past 👉 Sometimes no matter how hard we try our message is not received but this is not a reason to stop trying" Every incident has many ways of looking at it. Guess what! The offshore gas technicians in my research said the same top 4 qualities that build trust in safety leaders where the same 4 but a lack of those that causes distrust. Why is this useful to know? It supports the view that trust and distrust are a single construct at opposite ends of a continuum rather than two separate constructs. This is good news! It means when organisations invest in trust development it will reduce distrust at the same time. So no need for a separate initiative to tackle reducing distrust 😍. Unless the IT job you are interviewing for takes place inside a submarine, the question “Do you work well under pressure?” is usually a red flag You are not a firefighter, a SWAT team or a brain surgeon. Your job is to come up with solutions that relieve pressure and make life easy. If the company is in a constant state of agitation it’s usually down to poor leadership coupled with terrible engineering choices. Not to say there aren’t exceptions, but if the question comes up, try and understand if it is justified… Or run - either one is fine.

Teamwork is essential for a team to succeed, especially when facing major crises affecting your business or personal life. Over a decade ago, I received a dreaded call from my production engineer. One of our deep, high-pressure gas wells had a blowout. The well was out of control, causing extensive damage that took over two months to control, cap, and plug. I worked closely with my team day and night, consulted with experts, took charge, and eventually we were able to control the well and plugged it. That was a major liability that could have been much worse. But, after millions of dollars in losses, we finally managed to get control of the situation after two months of costly struggles. During the crisis, I worked closely with my team but ultimately, I had to make the quick decisions to protect my business. I had to face the pressure and isolation that comes with such decisions. Entrepreneurs often feel isolated during crisis situations. However, you can this by being more hands-on in your business, and focusing on team work through frequent interactions with your co-workers and consultants. Leaders often fail if they chose to remain isolated from their teams, co-workers, consultants, and vendors. My goal is to stay hands-on with my team and all my co-workers.
