As my second year as Executive Director comes to a close, I’ve taken time to reflect on this organization's incredible journey during the eight years I’ve been a part of it. This year, we reached a significant milestone: taking the first steps toward establishing our own static site shelter. This project will be a transformative venture for us in the years ahead, bringing stability and hope to so many. However, this progress has been accompanied by a sobering realization. Rising rent and the overall cost of living are driving more families back into instability—families we previously worked to help stabilize. It’s heartbreaking to see them priced out of affordable housing despite their best efforts to build secure lives. The road ahead will undoubtedly be more challenging than ever before. Yet, I remain hopeful. I believe in the power of community and our ability to come together to support one another. By fostering innovation and collaboration, we can develop creative solutions to what feels like an impossible problem. Let’s continue to work towards a future where every family has access to safe, affordable housing. When we say we make data-driven investments that are informed by the needs of the community, this is what we mean: Rocket Community Fund's flagship Neighbor to Neighbor program hires residents as #volunteers who go door-to-door to provide their neighbors with resources and information to help them stay in their homes. It's also a fact-finding mission, where we learn about the issues most concerning to residents. In 2023, they launched Neighbor to Neighbor in #Atlanta. Based on those findings, we've begun investing in programs and partnerships to better support residents with critical housing resources. Following our presentation to HRM's Community Planning and Economic Development Standing Committee (CPED) on behalf of the New Roots Community Land Trust (CLT) North End African Nova Scotian (ANS) Community, myself & Houssam Elokda had the privilege of being interviewed by Vanessa Wright with Global News to discuss the origins and urgency of our work. In my interview I discussed the origins of this work and emphasized its urgency. It’s crucial to act now to prevent further displacement of our community due to gentrification causing rising rental rates and extreme land dispossession in community. It's crucial to leverage this land to begin to rebuild the ANS communities that were lost in Cogswell and surrounding areas through Urban Renewal to help resident return to their previous status of working class, business and homeowners. titles that were lost by thousands of anus individuals through this process. The Trust intends to use funds generated from this initial development for the Community Land Trust (CLT) to acquire land in the North End and surrounding areas where historic ANS communities once lived and thrived; to restore and strengthen our community to its previous status. We hope this work, when competed, can serve as a blueprint for other communities to duplicate elsewhere to begin to develop their own sense of ownership and equity. How SEED Winnipeg Rebuilt Connection and Resilience During COVID-19 🌱 The COVID-19 pandemic forced community service organizations to navigate unprecedented challenges. For SEED Winnipeg Inc., a non-profit focused on financial empowerment, supporting staff mental health and retention became critical to their continued success. Thanks to funding from the Employment and Social Development Canada Community Services Recovery Fund, a one-time $400M investment to help organizations recover from the pandemic, and support from the Canadian Red Cross, SEED was able to: • Improve wage equity through a comprehensive salary review • Strengthen team bonds with outdoor activities grounded in Indigenous teachings •Provide culturally safe mental health resources and coaching for Indigenous staff •Create a Retention and Resilience Committee to guide ongoing support As SEED co-director Louise Simbandumwe explains, “We were at risk of no longer having a healthy organization if we didn’t address some of the internal issues.” This story highlights how crucial it is to support those who work tirelessly to uplift our communities.
