Reading Kevin Roose's NYT column about the Shoggoth meme last May fundamentally shifted my perspective on AI's nature. The image of a mysterious digital entity wearing a friendly mask resonated deeply, inspiring an unconventional experiment: Could I coax AI into creating a peppy pop song about the end of humanity? That's how "American Shoggothic" came to be--and if gave me some new insight about AI creativity. Those calling AI art mere theft miss something crucial - every artist, organic or digital, processes influences into something new. The fundamental act of artistic synthesis remains unchanged; only the scale and speed differ. We're all pattern-matching machines, organic or digital, trying to make sense of the world through creative expression. Though as a young writer who Hoovered up everything, I paid for the books. Most were from Half Price Books, but I still paid for them. To get right with humanity, AI companies need to pay artists for the works they have absorbed. The AI surprised me by writing from its own perspective - a digital entity processing existence through a pop song. As we navigate today's mixed signals about AI's impact, I hope this accidental collaboration can remind us that art helps process collective anxieties.
