Chris Moreno had a great conversation with Chibuzor N., Senior Managing Director at GREA, during the Information Management Network (IMN) event in Scottsdale. Chibuzor shared his journey from tax accounting to becoming a leader in multifamily real estate and highlighted the importance of mentorship and leadership. "𝑵𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒖𝒔 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒈𝒐𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒏 𝒕𝒐 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒘𝒆 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒐𝒅𝒂𝒚 𝒃𝒚 𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒗𝒆𝒔. Technology is playing a big role too. As Chibuzor put it: "𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒕𝑮𝑷𝑻 𝒊𝒔 𝒎𝒚 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝑰 𝒂𝒅𝒗𝒊𝒔𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒐𝒏 𝒂 𝒅𝒂𝒊𝒍𝒚 𝒃𝒂𝒔𝒊𝒔." This is promising news for the City of Chicago and its economy. It's designed to be pro-growth, pro-development, and pro-investment. If you were to speak to anyone doing business in Chicago (and this likely is true for any large city), whether they be large downtown developers or those operating in disinvested neighborhoods, small business owners in low-income neighborhoods or large restaurant groups, they all have stories of frustrating interactions with bureaucracy. A progressive agenda can also be pro-growth. Let's check in a year from now and see how this plays out.
On Friday, Mayor Brandon Johnson launched the "Cut the Tape" report, outlining more than 100 recommendations to streamline and expedite the City of Chicago housing and commercial development approval process. "Cut the Tape" is a pro-growth, pro-development, pro-investment agenda that, when implemented, will reduce time, costs, and uncertainty in the process. This will allow our residents to see more affordable housing options and more vibrant commercial corridors in their neighborhoods, more quickly! A few highlights: 🔸 Page 19: Build Faster, Build Everywhere, Build Together Framework 🔸 Page 20: "Cut the Tape" Initiative Overview 🔸 Page 23: Key Outputs & Outcomes 🔸 Page 27: Top 10 Big Bets 🔸 Page 35: Compete List of 100+ Recommendations It was a true joy and challenge to lead this eight-month long, multi-departmental process improvement initiative. The work is not ending, though; it is just beginning! Many thanks to John Roberson, Kenya K. Merritt, Lori L., Gabriella Nelson, Ethan Lassiter, Civic Consulting Alliance (Antonio Benecchi, Rohan Mascarenhas, Sam Abbott, Kaylin Davis), the Commissioners and staff of the 14 departments named in Executive Order 2023-21, and the hundreds of folks we interviewed and engaged in focus groups.

Finding the space to plan for the Mickledore new financial year is always good, and whiteboards and offices can be overrated - although spaniels aren't very strategic! 2023/24 was a good year; we worked with some old friends and colleagues and found new ones. We are increasingly supporting teams by providing resources and continuing our advisory work, and we look forward to doing more of this in the year ahead. In the meantime, our work on strategy, investment, economic assessments and business cases keeps us busy. #econdev #economicdevelopment #economicrecovery #regeneration #incentives #inwardinvestment #investment #university #townplanning #towncentre #cities #sciencepark #levellingup
