🥕🥦If I asked you to guess the amount of food that is thrown away each year, what would you say? 10%? 20%? Maybe up to a quarter of all food produced? 👇👇👇
Bad news: The answer is, unfortunately, 40%! According to the EPA, across all aspects of the supply chain from farm to table, more than $200 billion in food is wasted annually. 🗑️🗑️🗑️ (International Efforts on Wasted Food Recovery, EPA)
The reasons for the exorbitant waste are varied, but supply chain spoilage is a big chunk of it. That means anything from exceeding food-safe temperature ranges while in transit, sitting on the shelf for too long in the grocery store, or going bad before you have a chance to use it in your home.
The good news is that supply chain spoilage can be mitigated through the use of smart RFID tags, which are now more cost-effective than EVER before and can save grocery retailers big time in the long run.
Using RFID tags, grocers and food suppliers can:
🌡️ Track temperature ranges of sensitive products throughout the supply chain and make real-time adjustments to food storage to assure safety and prevent spoilage
🛒 Ensure inventory is shelved correctly according to best-by dates and first-in-first-out principles
🚚 Provide better tracking in transit to ensure sensitive items are received and shelved on time
RFID and access to food safety data are key for retailers to do their part in combating the food waste crisis and to save their company money. If you have any questions about implementing RFID, reach out to me any time!
