A water facility in a small town in Kansas recently shifted to manual operations post a ransomware attack last Sunday. Fortunately, the facility maintained operations and the water supply remained unaffected. This incident sheds light on a broader issue the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been faced with. Since September 2023, a staggering 70% of water systems have been discovered to be non-compliant with the Safe Drinking Water Act, highlighting critical cyber vulnerabilities being exploited by US adversaries like China, Iran, and Russia. This matter is of utmost importance as it involves mission-critical infrastructure. For further insights, refer to the attached article. #WaterFacility #CyberSecurity #EPA #InfrastructureSecurity

EPA found that over 70% of water systems do not fully comply with cybersecurity requirements under the Safe Drinking Water Act. Some of the glaring issues discovered include the widespread use of default passwords, easily compromised authentication systems, and a lack of basic cyber hygiene practices like regular risk assessments and incident response planning. In response, the EPA has issued an enforcement alert outlining critical measures water system operators must take to better secure their systems, such as: 📶 Reducing internet exposure 🛡️ Conducting regular risk assessments 🔑 Changing default passwords 📋 Maintaining asset inventories 🔁 Developing incident response/recovery plans 💾 Backing up systems ⚠️ Addressing known vulnerabilities 📚 Providing cybersecurity awareness training Safeguarding our critical water treatment infrastructure is a matter of public health and safety. Water utilities would be wise to thoroughly review the EPA's recommendations and take swift action to improve their cyber resilience posture. https://lnkd.in/exDae7h9
