Yesterday I spoke at the Slush Y Science side event about the topic of educating for research commercialization and impact. The Y Science event features science-based business ideas and research commercialization, and is organized by University of Helsinki and Helsinki Institute of Life Science (HiLIFE) in cooperation with, among others, Aalto University.   At Aalto University we are now seriously pushing for education that nudges both individual researchers and the overall research culture towards impact through commercialized research results. This is much more than entrepreneurship education for researchers considering commercializing their research. For example, for PhD students we seek to build a foundation by tackling questions like: How does my research create value? What problem does it solve? We also focus on skills like talking to external stakeholders about your research. And then, of course, courses that help evaluate and develop ideas into products or services. In the end, while we aim at helping create more and better university spin-offs we also seek to unlock much wider impact.   In developing these activities we also need to link education with current practices and embed education into the reality of the university. There are fundamentally different practices in different research groups (they vary substantially even in very entrepreneurial groups, like those of Risto Ilmoniemi, Jaan Praks, Mikko Möttönen or Michael Hummel). We also need inspiration from success stories and role models, and we need an exciting intellectual climate where bold ideas at the edge between science and science fiction are being discussed.    The initiatives for educating for research commercialization and impact are done in close collaboration with our innovation services (Janne Laine and Tomi Erho), making sure to link education closely with incubation processes. We've only recently started to be more systematic about impact from research (Janne Laine's role as VP of Innovation has only existed for about five years), but we've already made a lot of progress. Now we're taking this to the next level, among other things (this is not the only initiative to this end!), through more systematic and broad education for research commercialization and impact. oiAcademy – Open innovation pathways solving challenges for manufacturing Start-ups and SMEs in business transformation Innovation and entrepreneurship have an instrumental role for the EU and on the global level. In all sizes of organizations, the ability to turn new ideas into profitable realities is necessary. To engage in open innovation processes with both high-level vertical, domain-specific skills, as well as horizontal skills in technology transfer and innovation management are required. Within the project oiAcademy, an international innovation and entrepreneurship program for an innovative learning process is developed. Participants acquire knowledge on topics such as entrepreneurship, manufacturing technologies, personal development as well as product and service development on an innovative learning platform. The IWF provides all technology-oriented learning content. Relevant are processes for product development, CAx methods, prototyping, manufacturing processes with a focus on subtractive and additive processes and cost calculation for prototypes and market-ready products. ICSB 2024 World Congress Award: Best Experiences - GERMANY Title: Empowering K-12 Pupils: Fostering Problem-Solving Skills Through Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Computational Thinking­­ Author:  Anette Bentz, Claudia Wiepcke, Bernhard Standl and Jonas Krasowski Winning Abstract: Preparing today's pupils for a rapidly changing world with multiple challenges requires thoughtful methods. In this context, the intersection of entrepreneurship, sustainability, and digital technologies has emerged as a critical factor for innovation and addressing global challenges. Thus, we strengthen cross-cutting problem-solving skills and subject-specific knowledge to empower pupils to identify solutions in an increasingly complex world. Considering the problem-solving skills, a combination of design, entrepreneurial, and computational thinking is applied, which are well documented in related research. To further enhance those approaches and visualize the thought processes, we used a problem-solving canvas we defined, which inspired the business model canvas. Considering subject-specific knowledge, the project focuses on integrating sustainability, entrepreneurship, and informatics, key resources in the literature. Methodological, project-based hackathons are chosen, as project-based learning is described to correlate positively with more sustainable and engaging learning. Hackathons challenge pupils to critically analyze sustainability issues and develop a digital solution through design, entrepreneurial, and computational thinking. The hackathon concludes with a pitch session where pupils present their approach and smartphone app to a jury.

🚀 Exciting Updates from the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences! 🌿💻 As members of the Entrepreneurship Research Group at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, we are passionate about helping SMEs and turning challenges into opportunities, with a focus on driving digital and sustainable transformations for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). 🔹 Current Projects: - Twin Green & Digital Transition Project (RAAK-mkb): Exploring how Dutch F&B SMEs can thrive by integrating digital processes like AI and data analytics to their sustainable practices, aligning with the EU's green and digital strategy. - Erasmus+ DIGIFABS Project: Empowering F&B SMEs to overcome digital and organizational hurdles in their transformation journeys. Our first paper as partners in the ATTRACT EU project is published! Claudia Werker, Gernot Pruschak, Christian Hopp and I are researching Entrepreneurial Mindset, Diversity and Open Innovation practices within the 18 Attract EU projects on research, development and innovation. In our paper published in CERN IdeaSquare - the innovation space at CERN Journal of Experimental Innovation, we investigate the interplay between open innovation activities and entrepreneurial intentions in the commercialization process of research results originating from academia. Through qualitative case study research, we identify theoretical mechanisms through the qualitative analysis of five case studies. Our results show that inbound and coupled open innovation activities compensate for lower entrepreneurial intentions among academically oriented scientists. However, establishing partnerships remains challenging, particularly in pre-prototyping phases. Nevertheless, our findings point towards social entrepreneurial intentions as fruitful avenues for stimulating entrepreneurial behaviour in academic scientists.

Recommended reading for all stakeholders (including industry folks) interested in upping innovation outcomes at universities. Nice to see several of the recommended practices being key pillars of Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship @ PES University.

How should business schools respond to the changing world, with increasing focus on sustainability and the rise of AI? 🎓🌱🤖   Bruno van Pottelsberghe explored these topics and more in a recent EFMD Global piece. In August 2024, van Pottelsberghe became the new President and Rector of Corvinus University of Budapest. Previously, he was Dean of the Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management and co-founded the QTEM Network. His career includes roles at the OECD and the European Patent Office, focusing on innovation policy and intellectual property.   He identified three key challenges when asked, "What challenges do you believe business schools will face in the coming years? How can they tackle these challenges?" 📈   “Timeframe shrinking, the demand for 'instant' knowledge conversion, and internationalisation”, said van Pottelsberghe, highlighting the need for closer ties with businesses, flexible programmes, and a focus on critical thinking supported by strong research. To compete globally, he emphasises the importance of high-quality research and attracting international talent.   “Students are less willing to dedicate their time solely to studying and training; they want jobs, entrepreneurial ventures, and, first and foremost, salaries and a feeling of competence earlier, and have less patience for acquiring classic academic knowledge.”   He was also asked about his hopes for the future of Corvinus University and the direction of business education. 🤩   He sees Corvinus as ready to compete internationally but stresses the need to lead globally: "Regarding the future of educational and research services at Corvinus, I see three key decisive factors: artificial intelligence, sustainability and multidisciplinary approaches." New leadership roles, including deans for AI and sustainability, will support these goals at the School.   Want to read the full article?
