Excerpts from my 2017 study on the dynamics of Egypt’s film industry. #egypt #filmmaking #cinema #entertainment The evolution of the Egyptian film industry spanned over a hundred years. The film production started to take shape in early 1930s. In that period, Egyptian filmmakers were building up a business, as part of the entertainment industry that was dominated by theater at that time. Entertainment Boom The Egyptian theater, of all forms, was at its climax in mid-1930s. The entertainment market in Egypt boomed during the Great Depression (1929-1939). Setting aside the artistic value, songs, music and theater prospered. Record companies, mostly owned by foreigners living in Egypt, made massive profits from sales of records by Egyptian singers like Mohamed Abdel Wahab, Umm Kulthum and Mounira El-Mahdeya.
