I am grateful for the trust my community has on me. I'm also grateful for the trust my elders have on me.
Growing up in the 80's, the politics of Nunavik already fascinated me then before the age of 10. I remember thinking then, that this is what I will be involved in when I'm older.
*All of my participation in politics has never involved personal ambitions and never will.* It has always been answering the call to serve from others, and working for others until my limits are reached.
I have never sought for leadership on my own accord. Such instances of positions in leadership is has always been because others insisted that I lead. There were three instances where I've been asked to lead, and have refused each time.
Now my elders are asking again, I don't know what to say this time.
The colonial system which was forced upon them just to be considered other than fauna with human rights needs to be dismantled, and replaced by a system of our own making.
The powers that be, do not have the mindset that is needed. They only know the colonial framework that has been in power. They believe that playing this system, and emulating their methods is the way to go.
Self-subgugation, what a hard cold reality it is for Inuit. And just like the adoption of Christianity, the intrusive nature of it into any crack of Indigenous (and/or ethnic) cultures and traditions, the adoption of colonial nationalism is the same and equally apparent.
A new era is in the horizon, but I don't know if people will look at the same horizon.
