We are proud to share that 16 residents from multicultural backgrounds in Town of Port Hedland participated in swimming lessons at the South Hedland Aquatic Centre during Term 2 this year. Programs like these are essential, providing at-risk groups with the opportunity to learn vital swimming and lifesaving skills. Alarmingly, multicultural communities are disproportionately represented in drowning statistics in Western Australia, with 33.3% of fatal drowning incidents in the 2021-22 financial year involving individuals born overseas. The risk is even higher in regional and remote communities, where people are two and a half times more likely to be involved in a drowning incident compared to those in the Perth Metropolitan area. Royal Life Saving WA is dedicated to community development in regional and remote locations across WA. We collaborate with various partners to offer training, participation, and leadership development opportunities to residents, aiming to prevent drowning incidents. Our partnerships with communities like Port Hedland and organisations like BHP enable us to deliver a wide range of water safety and drowning prevention programs for at-risk communities throughout Western Australia. These initiatives strive to ensure that all Western Australians have the awareness, skills, and knowledge needed to safely enjoy aquatic activities in any location. Great to work with Matamata-Piako District Council on this project ensuring a cost-effective solution was provided to enable year-round aquatic provision to continue in the district. As a region, like many across the New Zealand, the Waikato suffers from aged infrastructure (average age of community pools are 45+ years with school pools being 60 years) and limited suitable year-round provision to aquatic spaces highlighting that extensive planning is needed to ensure we have adequate aquatic space to meet the needs of our future generations. This will take time and significant investment; therefore, we must ensure we continue to maintain current provision, especially in communities like Matamata where community pools are a fabric of the community and usually the only spaces where our children can learn lifelong lessons such as water safety.   https://lnkd.in/dNx4maJf

There is a new development with Victoria's Department of Education making it mandatory for schools to tell aquatic facilities about their students' swimming abilities following the tragic drowning event at Port Fairy. My personal condolences to those affected by the incident. Having measures in place to prevent drowning, providing safer aquatic facilities and ensuring the safety of all stakeholders is a large responsibility. We may have misconceptions on responsibilities, but this is why we have safety regulations and guidelines in place to assist in mitigating such risks.
