Simple Swim word of the week: Guardrails When we learned to walk, what were some of the guardrails that helps us find our balance. Was it someone holding our hands or a coffee table or couch to lean on. What about when we learned to ride a bike. Did you have someone hold your bike or did you use training wheels. Or just lower the seat enough to safely plant your feet on the ground. When it comes to swimming some may feel that you must always use in person instruction to learn to swim. Are there any guardrails one could implement to make swimming possible on one's own. At Simple Swim we believe everyone can swim. And with the proper guardrails there is no reason one couldn't learn all by themself. So what are some of the guardrails we recommend. Well a nose clip for one. Because when you're learning to balance in water you're not always in an ideal position to keep water from entering your nose. And for most learning to swim, water up the nose is a deal breaker. Understand also that it's not just beginners that need and use nose clips. Many Olympic swimmers and water polo players use nose clips and all synchronized swimmers use nose clips. Puddle jumpers, also known as water wings, are often not recommended by swim coaches and instructors for several reasons: 1. 🛑False Sense of Security🛑: Puddle jumpers can give children and parents a false sense of security. Children may become overconfident in the water, believing they can swim independently without realizing the true dangers. 2. ❌Interference with Learning Proper Techniques❌: These devices can hinder the learning of proper swimming techniques. They keep children in an upright position, which is not the correct posture for learning how to swim. Swimming requires a horizontal position in the water, and reliance on puddle jumpers can delay mastering this skill. 3. 🚼Dependency🚼: Children can become dependent on puddle jumpers, making it difficult for them to transition to swimming without them. This dependency can slow down their overall progress in learning to swim. 4. 🚩Limited Range of Movement🚩: Puddle jumpers can restrict the range of motion in a child’s arms and torso, making it harder for them to learn the correct arm and body movements needed for effective swimming. 5. 🛟Safety Concerns🛟: While puddle jumpers provide some buoyancy, they are not a substitute for proper supervision and formal swim lessons. Overreliance on these devices can lead to dangerous situations if children are left unattended or venture into deeper water where the devices might not be effective. We recommend learning to swim through formal lessons and using flotation devices that support proper body positioning and swimming technique, such as barbells, pool noodles or kickboards, and always under close supervision. #WaterSafetyMonth

Swim Lessons Save Lives! Drowning is the leading cause of death for children one to four years old, and the second leading cause of death for children ages 5-14. Two children die every day from drowning. However, participating in formal swim lessons can reduce the risk by 88%. Swimming is the only activity or after-school sport that can save your child’s life or teach them how to save someone else’s. Being comfortable in the water is a necessity in life, because even if kids don’t go to a swimming pool regularly, they should be at ease near any body of water. Water is everywhere. It improves their social life Rare are the times when you’ll find a kid who doesn’t enjoy a good pool party, a summer dip to cool off or a chance to just splash around. Taking swimming lessons early means that your kid will fit right in at a party or during playtime without you having to worry about him or her being an outsider. It’s an incredible, low-impact workout There’s a reason why swimming is a preferred workout. It’s something you can continually do without putting stress on your joints. Swimming isn’t the easiest thing to do, but it gives people a high-intensity workout without stressing joints and muscles the same way that running or lifting weights do. It’s a workout that they can start early and never stop. Confidence is key Find a child swimming in any body of water and, chances are, they’re confident. Swimming gives kids something to do where they’re truly in charge of how quickly they improve. Kids will feel like if they can handle swimming, they can handle just about anything. Ultimately, it’s more of a question as to why shouldn’t your child be swimming, rather than why they should. Swimming lessons - Final instalment There was a point in everyone's learn to swim journey where the teacher said, "Remember to bring in your pyjamas next week". This was the moment everyone was waiting for and was the absolute Everest (perhaps Mariana Trench is more appropriate?) in terms of the learn to swim journey. It meant you would be tying the legs of your jammies at the bottom whilst treading water and fashioning a rudimentary floatation device. It also meant you were finally getting the opportunity to jump into the pool fully clothed to rescue a rubberised black brick from the bottom. Truly the stuff of dreams!! For years I assumed the brick retrieval skill was learned in case someone dropped something important in the sea. I would then be able to fetch it. I think I was in my late teens when I found out it was to grab a person who'd gone under. In the world of #learninganddevelopment this can be equated to the #teambuilding exercise or #awayday The best #experiences align with the #outcome and ensure the takeaway #learning can be applied in the situation it was designed for.
