The Earth Enterprise Project Way back in 1979 Dr Katheryn Pick wrote a thesis on how the element of depleting world resources should be taken into account when considering company profitability. Moreover, this can also be extended to statistics on country GDP - re-aligning concepts of which are the wealthiest countries. If you would like to read her original thesis then you can find it here. Finally, we have a deal! 🎉 After a protracted period filled with uncertainty and challenges, the EU member states have reached a consensus, endorsing the compromise on the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive today. Despite the negotiations resulting in a narrower focus — now impacting only 0.05% of EU companies — this development marks a critical stride towards the establishment of a unified legal framework across the EU for #responsiblebusinessconduct. This forthcoming framework is poised to guide companies through the complexities of managing #humanrights and #environmental considerations within their expansive global supply chains, thereby promoting equitable standards and legal clarity throughout the #SingleMarket. A special round of applause is due for the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2024, whose unwavering dedication and successful navigation through significant challenges paved the way for this agreement among the EU member states. We now look forward to the final ratification of the #CSDDD in the European Parliament!

On Friday, a significant milestone was reached in Europe with the agreement on the #CSDDD. This legislation marks a crucial step towards creating a level playing field, a principle that we at AIM-Progress have long championed through our efforts to integrate #HumanRights #DueDiligence into our members' responsible sourcing programs. While this progress is commendable, the journey from recognizing human rights risks and enhancing transparency to tackling the root causes and ensuring decent work for all workers and farmers is where the real challenge lies. Our ongoing mission will be to harmonize supplier requirements and empower suppliers worldwide to take ownership of their human rights’ due diligence processes. At AIM-Progress, we remain committed to supporting our members in this critical area, fostering co-creation of solutions, and spearheading practical, collaborative initiatives to address these challenges head-on.

The #EuropeanUnion is building the framework for a #fairglobalisation - in these european elections, your vote can count for an economy built on respect for #humanrights and the #environment Loss of sovereignity, burocracy, disunity. Many are critical of the EU. Especially vocal, nationalist and europsceptic voices are questioning the fundaments of European politics. Supporters of the EU don’t tire in giving counterarguments, rightfully pointing out the value of the common market, peace and european solidarity. A central benefit of the EU and its current policies is however often overseen: like no other institution in the world, the EU is using its regulatory and market power to create a #framework for a #fairglobalisation. Benefiting from the fact that it offers companies one of the biggest markets of the world, it sets up strong rules in protection of #humanrights and the #environment that companies present on the market need to meet: from data protection, regulations that control digital platforms power, AI regulation to climate tarrifs and rules on recyclability as well as minimum standards on human rights and environmental due diligence. The EU is setting important standards that require companies to use their power fairly, without causing excessive external costs to neither planet nor people, be it in their digital or physical activities. Principles of risk-based #prioritization and, while unitary standards will protect them from having to comply with divergent standards. Details of these rules are rightly discussed about, some call them overburdening, others too weak. It is normal that the new and innovative rules cannot be perfect from the outset, have to be #evaluated and #improved. But we should not forget: not regulating the power of businesses in a globalized world would essentially mean #losingcontrol over working conditions and environmental conditions and letting the pressures of competition via weak and cheap standards rule. In that regulatory #racetothebottom, workers from europe and everywhere are under pressure to accept worse conditions and pressure on businesses to #externalisecosts both social and to the environment, stays rational in the face of market forces. The EU is the institution best placed to shape these rules: it has the power to enforce them and it has, in its unique mix of being based on human rights, free trade and consensus building, the best chance we might have for a #legitimate and #powerful regulator. You might agree with the rules or not, want to change them completely or in part. But #onlytheEU gives its citizens the chance to shape the big questions of globalization actively and responsibly. Let us not waste that chance, lets vote tomorrow.
