The Islington Giving Community Panel, a diverse group of residents, has launched a new funding call! “We are a group of 13 Islington residents aged 18 to 80+ who have come together to discuss what is important to local people and to develop this call, to invite local organisations to apply for funding to address some of the things we think are most important. What does it mean to build #capacity in small, #ruralcommunities? It might mean better community engagement. But in many of the communities the NCRPC serves, it really means technical expertise and man hours to implement projects. With limited city and non-profit staffing, passionate volunteers can be overwhelmed as they try to find the time and knowledge needed to access funding. They need boots on the ground to amplify volunteer commitment. Many city clerks now hold that position as a side gig, retired people fill the vacuum to act as their town's water system operator part-time, community foundations may have no staff beyond a volunteer board of directors. We need a new model that solves these issues with a collaborative approach.

A valuable community asset (ACV) is a structure or parcel of land that is recognized for enhancing the social welfare or interests of the nearby community. Examples can range from village stores, local pubs, libraries, community centers, children's facilities, theaters, and even allotments. In order to be designated as an ACV, the property must be put forward by an organization with ties to the local community, such as a parish council, neighborhood forum, non-profit group, or community organization. A structure or parcel of land is considered to have community value if it promotes the cultural, recreational, or athletic activities of the local region. Residential properties, including their gardens, outbuildings, and related lands, are not eligible to be recognized as community assets.

With the disclaimer that I've only skimmed the full study, it's good to see Urban taking a close look at non-profit collaboration with local government to address a challenging issue - and it brought to mind my time as an early member of the Rebuild PHL team and the lessons we had to learn. Especially the importance of balancing ambitious goals with realistic timelines, which cannot be overstated. FUNDING: Comic Relief Community Fund Re-Opens for Applications Grassroots, community-led organisations in England can apply for grants of up to £5,000 through the Comic Relief Community Fund to support services that benefit local communities.   Funding is available for organisations with an income under £250,000, and applications must focus on one of four areas: tackling the immediate impacts of hardship (e.g., foodbanks, shelters, financial advice), building long-term resilience to poverty (e.g., skills training, mental resilience), supporting equity and inclusion (e.g., addressing inequalities related to gender, race, or ability), or promoting climate justice (e.g., environmental education, resilience to climate change). Grants can be used for core costs, project-related costs, or both. Comic Relief expect to award around 140 grants. The fund is managed by the charity Groundwork. Crisis has always been there for people in hard times. This past year, their services, expertise and advocacy have been a lifeline for thousands. Their 2022-23 impact report highlights some of the incredible work they're doing. Across Britain, over 9,000 people benefitted from their services.
