Seeing the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, connect with Nigerian women leaders this weekend got me fired up. She spoke about her journey of self-discovery and finding her Nigerian roots. It's a powerful reminder that knowing your heritage and embracing your community can be incredibly empowering. Here's what resonated most with me: Mentorship matters. Women at the top need to reach back and support the next generation. Show young girls "She looks like me, and I can be that." Community builds confidence. When you connect with others who share your background and goals, it fuels your drive and ambition. This is exactly why I'm so passionate about building strong communities for women in business, especially in Nigeria. I had an absolute blast at the Muslim Women in Consulting event yesterday! So many great gems which I will be sharing soon but one from Omodara Adediran on sponsorship really hit home. We all know how important finding a sponsor is for career growth. But let's flip the script and ask ourselves: Who are we sponsoring? 🤔 Are we lifting others up, using our influence to open doors? Are we living our values at work, not just talking about them? Are we authentically representing ourselves as Muslims in the workplace? It all starts with changing the stories we tell ourselves. ❌ From feeling powerless.  ✅ To embracing our power. So, ask yourself today: Who am I sponsoring? Here's a Short Story; When the vision of Lead For Good Africa first captured my heart, I knew I needed good counsel to build well and make the vision a successful reality. As the good book says; to win in life, you need a lot of good counsel. My first move was then to Ms. Osayi Alile, who graciously offered the counsel, guidance and encouragement I needed to begin the journey as a Founder of a Social Enterprise. Hearing her words; "Go for it, You Can Do It", gave me wings and the confidence to follow the vision in my heart; to invest in people and democratise access to opportunities for economic advancement, especially for the underserved. Moreover, my first experience as a leader in the Development Sector was under her guidance. She's shown me where to go, what to learn, how to learn. From her wealth of experience, she's taught me how to climb despite the uncertainties I had at the time, and still feel sometimes. I could write a whole book about what I've learnt by watching, listening and learning from her, but here are three lessons for every leader which she graciously embodies; 1. Lead With Love 2. Lead With Humility 3. Invest in People It's the last post in my 'It Begins With You' series in commemoration of International Women's Month. Any time I think about a woman who actively invests in others, creating opportunities to accelerate progress, I think about Ms. Osayi Alile. Today, I'm taking a moment to honor her. And here's to every woman out there actively working to create a more inclusive world, where women thrive and fulfil their potential; May we be them. May we know them.
