Axios CEO Dr. Joseph Saba recently joined global healthcare leaders in Shanghai, China, for a discussion on ‘Challenges and Opportunities of Global Market Access for Pharmaceuticals’. Hosted by the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS), the panel explored ways to increase sustainable access to medicines in both emerging and developed markets, building on learnings from access-focused initiatives in China and across the globe, including: ☑️ What emerging markets can learn from access initiatives in developed countries and vice versa. ☑️ The need to rethink how market access is conducted in emerging markets to enable sustainable solutions. ☑️ There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to access – differentiated strategies are key. ☑️ The importance of integrating market access considerations early in the product lifecycle to inform health technology assessment decisions. ☑️ The role of partnerships and digital health solutions in market access. Thank you to moderator Eric Bouteiller, panelists Dr. Xiaobin Wu, Jon Fairest, Professor Ding Jingxi, Dr. Vivian Chen, Paola Barbarino, as well Lou Garrison, for helping advance this important dialogue. Global medicine use is expected to grow significantly over the next five years. What regions will experience the highest volume of growth? 🌏China, India and Asia-Pacific IQVIA Institute’s Global Use of Medicines 2024: Outlook to 2028 found that global medicine use increased by 14% (or 414 billion defined daily doses) over the past five years, and is expected to grow another 12% by 2028. The driving force is increased global access to medicines. That’s why higher income regions will have lower volume growth. At this week's International Health Ministerial Summit in Rwanda, Roche's Dr Allan Pamba. Allan Pamba highlighted the critical role of partnerships, such as the collaboration between (RED) and Roche, in advancing access to diagnostics across Africa.
This week marks the inaugural International Health Ministerial Summit in Rwanda, a great thank you to Informa Markets for this one of a kind gathering. A significant thank you to the Honourable Minister Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana for opening Rwanda to host this critical conference as well as engaging with the Roche Diagnostics team in a bilateral session on areas of collaboration. We are much encouraged by the progress realised in Rwanda and are firmly committed to continuing on the path of collaboration and partnership to increase access to quality diagnostics for more people. In his opening remarks Dr Amit N. Thakker said “Collaboration is the new innovation”; this rings true for me, especially in Africa. With the barriers faced in driving equitable access to reliable testing, each stakeholder within the healthcare ecosystem has a valuable role to play in ensuring a healthier future for all Africans. In our session on ‘Strengthening diagnostics capacity in Africa – The power of partnerships’, we highlighted that only 20% of Africans have access to diagnostics. Nqobile Ndlovu MPH spoke about the need to amplify & listen to the voice of the community in the dialogue on how we close the diagnostics gap in Africa. Intentional collaborative efforts are required to speedily realise a holistic and sustainable approach to diagnostics access in Africa. Robust Government (MoH) stewardship is imperative. I also participated in a panel discussion on enabling Africa’s self-sufficiency from R&D, to locally manufactured Diagnostics & pharmaceuticals. Key prerequisites to attract these investments were highlighted. These include expediting regulatory harmonization among Africa’s emerging economic blocks, as well as accelerating trade agreements that open Africa’s borders for free movement of goods and people, read ‘The Africa Free Continental Trade Agreement’. Thank you to the honourable Dr Ibrahima SY, Health Minister Senegal, Dr. Ahmed Ogwell OUMA - FAPH, Nyawira Njeru, Dominic Wilhelm, MSc. and our moderator Philippe GERWILL on robust discussions, I look forward to engaging further in areas of collaboration.
