***1,000 new EV cars registered per day in 2024*** <-- a realistic headline The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) have released car registrations figures for September, traditionally a bumper month, due to the plate change. My forecasting model had suggested around 51,500 fully electric vehicles, which had felt high, given the recent anti-EV rhetoric. I'm delighted to confirm I was wrong... it was actually 56,387, an all-time record and 20.5% of all registrations. Interesting to see the Tesla Model Y still selling well, given it's due for an update in the coming months (more on that model below). I'm now forecasting around 365,000 registrations in 2024, hence the headline above. Some other news this week: - 70,000 public #EV chargepoints now installed - Price cuts for fully electric Vauxhall Motors Ltd Astra and Corsa - Ford calling for more EV subsidies (n.b. 2nd and 9th best selling car in September was the Puma and Kuga, neither available as fully electric) - BMW Group iX3 (made in China) no longer available to configure online - The new cheapest Tesla Model Y is now available from a slightly higher £46,990. Some highlights for FULL EV registrations in July 2024 YoY. Note: Tesla Cybertruck outsold all others combined in pick-up sales, including those from Ford Motor Company, General Motors, and Rivian!! We guess it's not a surprise, considering Tesla has touted almost 1.5M orders for the truck, right Elon!! Some highlights: ➡ Tesla reversed a 5-month YoY slump, increasing July sales 1.4% on the back of Cybertruck ➡ Tesla's Model 3 sedan saw its registrations fall 31 percent YoY ➡ Honda Prologue is going be a dominant player ➡ Sky-high incentives on popular battery-electric crossovers, including $19,703 on the Kia EV9, $13,015 on Volkswagen Group's ID 4 and $7,035 on the Honda Prologue ➡ Without heavy incentives, EV sales would have seen a DECLINE YoY ➡ Most OEMs are just getting started in the various segments ➡ Lucid Motors sales were 562 for the month, VINFAST 111 😯 ➡ Ford Motor Company up 67% ➡ Kia Worldwide up 62% ➡ BMW of North America up 24%, Mercedes-Benz AG down 3.2% ➡ Toyota Motor Corporation and Lexus up 95% and 187% respectively ➡ Hyundai Motor Company (현대자동차) 10,846 registrations among its Hyundai, Kia and Genesis brands, good for second place overall ➡ In the January to July period, EV registrations grew 8.7 percent compared with the same period last year said S&P Global ➡ Electric vehicles captured 7.6 percent of the light-vehicle market in the first seven months of the year compared with a 7.2 percent share in same period last year - A LONG WAY TO 50%!! For good or bad, the electric vehicle transition is hitting the brakes. ➤ Porsche and GM announced delays in their EV plans. ➤ Tesla reported a 45% profit decline due to slower demand. ➤ These brands all paused EV production acceleration: ↳ Ford ↳ Nissan ↳ Volkswagen ↳ Mercedes-Benz The softer EV demand has led to inventory build-up at dealerships. Toyota's success with hybrids suggest a changing landscape in the automotive industry. More consumers are looking at hybrids for the following EV issues: → Concerns over range anxiety → Lack of charger availability → Poor battery performance in cold weather ➤ Personally, I think we’ll see a shift.
