This is one of my favorite quotes about leadership. It doesn't just apply to military leaders; substitute 'Army' for 'company' or 'team', change 'soldier' to 'employee' or 'team member.' "The main purpose of being a leader is to be someone who cares enough to bring the group together to accomplish a mission successfully, to allow people to grow, to allow people to be safe, and to allow them to be able to take care of their families. A leader does not “choose” the best or most opportune time in which to lead. A good leader takes the challenge whenever and wherever it presents itself and does the best he or she can. Leaders have to be everything they want their soldiers to be- soldiers learn to be good leaders from good leaders. We talk about leadership and say that to be a good leader you must have candor, commitment, courage, and competence. If you truly care you will do all those things. If you care about our nation, if you care about the Army, if you care about the soldiers and their families, you’ll ensure you possess those qualities. You must love being a soldier; love being around other soldiers; love leading, training, and caring for soldiers and their families; be technically and tactically proficient; be dedicated, motivated, physically fit, mentally alert, and morally straight; believe in your fellow soldier, in your Army, and in your nation; strive to be all you can be. A thought about leadership. When I was a young Sergeant in the Army, I worked under some absolutely fantastic leaders. Particularly, I had a seasoned Sergeant First Class and a battalion commander who regularly counseled me on developing my leadership skills. It was well-impressed upon me to difference between a leader and a supervisor. Supervisors often focus on the minuscule, the inconsequential, in order to remind everyone that they are in charge. “The world can be burning as long as your boots are shined,” kind of attitudes. Leaders make sure their people are taken care of, even if it means flexibility with the less critical points. Rank grants you the authority, but respect grants you the power. If you’re constantly having to remind everyone of your rank through frivolous exercises of authority, you’re not a leader.

As an officer in the British Army, we had a saying - the first thing we were ever taught at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst: "First my soldiers, then my kit, then myself" - and it's stuck with me! I learned that leadership isn’t about authority or power - true leadership is about service. It’s knowing the strengths and limitations of your team, understanding their needs, and empowering them to succeed.   In high-pressure, high-stress situations, taking care of your people means fostering trust, communication, and resilience - knowing that the "mission" is accomplished not because of one person, but through the collective effort of the team.   In the army, just as in business, success depends on more than just strategy - it’s about the well-being of the people executing it.
