At PANI, we're passionate about creating change from the ground up by experimenting, learning, and replicating our successes. Recently, we've been exploring ways to boost farmers' incomes through innovative intercropping techniques. Meet Avani (name changed), one of the many farmers who took this journey with us. Avani dared to try something unconventional: intercropping groundnut with sugarcane. With PANI's support, she navigated this unique method, and the results were incredible! 1. Achieved the national average productivity for groundnut. 2. Earned additional income without any damage to her sugarcane crop. 3. This farmer also highlighted the importance of government policies and support systems. Meet Mr Chetan Dattatrya Deshmukh, a grape farmer from Nasik, who revolutionised his vineyard with SoilSens! For over 15 years, Mr Deshmukh struggled with management of soil nutrition, particularly during the critical fruiting stage. Traditional soil testing methods were either too slow or too costly, causing delays and potential income loss. But in January 2024, everything changed when he adopted the SoilSens Nutrisens device. "Using SoilSens has been incredibly beneficial for my vineyard. The instant soil data during the fruiting stage helped me identify a potassium deficiency, allowing me to apply potash immediately. This timely action resulted in a significantly better grape yield," says Mr Deshmukh. With SoilSens’ on-field soil tests, he received accurate results instantly which helped him address the nutrient deficiency promptly. This prevented a potential income loss of INR 60,000 to INR 70,000, optimised fertiliser use and improved overall soil health. Mr Deshmukh's story is a testament to the power of innovative agri-tech solutions. Since we started ecosystem development in 2021, we have supported more than 300 smallholder farmers in East Nusa Tenggara and South Sumatra in implementing Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). We began our journey in Mbay, East Nusa Tenggara, where our farmers cultivate rice. To illustrate, farmers in Mbay have increased their productivity by 4x, resulting in up to IDR 26 million in additional monthly income for local rice millers. PPAI technology in coffee plantations is also breaking records. We are addressing the main problem of low coffee productivity due to various factors.
