Autonomous Flight — Earlier this month, we demonstrated autonomous aerial logistics operations during the U.S. Air Force’s ‘Agile Flag 24-3’ exercise using a Cessna 208B Caravan equipped with a suite of technologies developed by Xwing’s autonomy team, which Joby acquired in June of this year. During the exercise, the Caravan completed more than 3,900 miles of autonomous flight, including fully autonomous taxi, take-off and landing at numerous sites the aircraft had not previously visited. A vision of an artificial intelligence piloted business jet was presented to the world last October by Embraer, while in recent years autonomous piloting in specific circumstances has become a reality. Two companies, Cirrus Aircraft and HondaJet now offer an autonomous flight feature for emergencies. For several years before these recent developments, the aviation industry had been debating reduced or no pilot operations. While airlines and their passengers may offer resistance to artificial intelligence (AI) controlled aircraft, the freight market has seen demonstrations of unmanned drones over non-long-haul routes. However, for the business jet sector the only customer that needs to be convinced is the high net worth individual or corporation. Another strategic move in the #future of #aviation and #electricflight ⚡⚡
✔ Joby acquires Xwing autonomy division ✔ We're pleased to announce that Joby has acquired the autonomy division of Xwing, a leader in the development of autonomous technology for aviation. Founded in 2016, Xwing has completed 250 fully autonomous flights and more than 500 auto-landings to date, becoming the first company to receive an official project designation for the certification of a large uncrewed aerial system (UAS) from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in April 2023 and the first to receive an Air Force Military Flight Release in 2024. The Superpilot software, developed in-house at Xwing enables safe, uncrewed operations, supervised from the ground, and is the world’s first fully autonomous gate-to-gate flight technology. While the aircraft Joby is certifying will have a fully-qualified pilot on board, we recognize that a future generation of autonomous aircraft will play an important part in unlocking our vision of making clean and affordable aerial mobility as accessible as possible and this acquisition places Joby at the forefront of aviation autonomy. Welcome to the Joby team! Read more: https://lnkd.in/eAbm64MC
