Got 4 likes (🫣) for my post on Carl Jung—can we beat that with Diogenes of Sinope? I know, I’m not making things easy. Nobody knows who this guy is… So, chances are, this post will get buried in your endless feed, with a hypothetical minus 10 likes (𝗂𝖿 𝖫𝗂𝗇𝗄𝖾𝖽𝖨𝗇 𝖺𝗅𝗅𝗈𝗐𝖾𝖽 𝗍𝗁𝖺𝗍). But guess what? We can beat the odds! I resurrected Diogenes of Sinope and teleported him to 2024 for a special 15-minute conversation in my podcast studio. For those unfamiliar, Diogenes of Sinope (404 BCE – 323 BCE) is a Greek philosopher and one of the most famous figures of the Cynic school of philosophy. Known for his unconventional lifestyle (he was living in a barrel), his wit and defiance of social norms, he is the ultimate critic of society. In this episode, we discussed #polarization in modern society, #climate, and #AI. Let’s just say Diogenes isn’t known for being particularly kind or diplomatic. The conversation ended up being pretty cynical… “𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 𝘵𝘰𝘥𝘢𝘺 ...? 𝘈 𝘧𝘢𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘰𝘭, 𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘩 𝘥𝘢𝘻𝘻𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘣𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘥! 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘵 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘦? 𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘢𝘴 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘢𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶'𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬. The Dynamics of Competition: Your drive to #survive in your human form is hardwired into your genetic circuits: to seek out and search for life sustaining resources; and having found them, to process them into forms useful for your survival. However, you are not the only one of your kind in this search. There are many others who desire them with equal urgency and purpose. If resources are plenty and gathering, easy; all gatherers will prosper in peace and contentment. You may even engage in sharing and giving to others in the realm. But when resources become scarce and difficult to acquire, the gatherers might engage with each other a bit differently: they compete… and they compete severely; fiercely; and even, maliciously. And yet, whenever severe competition becomes obviously destructive for everyone; you try other strategies. You work and experiment with #communications, #cooperation, #collaboration, #complementation.... and #innovation. You will even try and experiment with #reciprocity: reciprocal generosity versus reciprocal violence…as the case may require! In time, you will adapt and even transform yourself! Usually, this is the order and progression of #competitive life in the wild; especially in that laissez faire, free-for-all competition, a-la-Adam Smith cum Charles Darwin’s do-or-die arena! In this discourse, I will focus on #competence: the level of skills and #mastery necessary to survive and #win in life. ...excerpt from "The Nature and #DynamicsOfCompetence"; RSMD (#ProfessorSam; also available on Spotify; Podcasts: "#CoffeeTalks on the Clouds")

I was listening to possibly one of the best history podcasts this weekend, Hardcore History, by Dan Carlin. He was talking about how as you go back in time, History changes mixture. Ancient history, he argues, is maybe 80% myth/legend and 20% reality. This is due possibly to the lack of sources and the fact that those who wrote it also acted on behalf of those who were being written on. One could call it the most ancient way of propaganda. It was being written for the name to last into eternity, in the way such name wanted eternity to perceive it. He says as you travel closer in time, say the World War II, this mix shifts to 80% reality and 20% myth. Please note these are subjective percentages to explain a point. I thought it was a very accurate and interesting way to look at what we know from the past and what we consider truth. Now, here is my thought... The internet and social media have triggered a jump to a parallel timeline where time and distance work in a different way. There is access to everything but hard to distinguish what is what. We are reading things that are supposed to be consumed now but be part of a greater plan, a mastermind long game of influence and misinformation, which is in fact meant to change the course of history. From simply traveling destinations reality vs instagram posts, to plainly lying about who someone is, both in first and third person, in all kinds of social spheres, including what did or didn't happen. Are we back to where we started but with much more harmful tools of communication? Have we always been a bunch of liars who have used all our potential to lie as much as technology has let us? Should we develop technology that prevent us from lying? Will AI learn to lie? Are we there yet? #history #foodforthought #reflections #letsmakegoodhistory

I hear this word "advantage" quite often when talking about social awkwardness and the extreme versions as advantages and strengths. And I have a problem with some of this language mainly because it's comparative, and therefore it brings us into a hierarchical models. The essence of evolution, particularly when viewed through the lens of complex adaptive systems, is not about individual advantage but about the emergence of functional complexity. This complexity enables systems—be it an organism, an ecosystem, or a society—to utilize energy efficiently, adapt to stress, and innovate. Thus, the diverse neurocognitive profiles that constitute neurodiversity are not advantageous in isolation but are integral to the tapestry of human evolution because of their contribution to collective adaptability and resilience. https://lnkd.in/gdJNV9CW

As we keep learning and exploring, our soul stays at the heart of who we are, shaping our beliefs, thoughts, and sense of self. As pastors and ministry leaders, why is a thorough understanding of the body, mind, and soul so vital as we minister in a rapidly shifting world? In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by Dr. Stan Wallace. Stan is the president and CEO of Global Scholars. He travels the world, writing and speaking on issues of apologetics, ethics, and Christian thought. His most recent book is entitled Have We Lost Our Minds?: Neuroscience, Neurotheology, the Soul, and Human Flourishing. Together, Stan and Jason explore concepts around the brain, the mind, and the soul. Stan shares the dangers of some of the extremes in these conversations and helps point us to a healthy middle way that resonates with biblical truth. Now I want to encourage you to hang with us in this conversation because Stan has to explain some deep concepts, but in the second half of the conversation, Stan really helps us understand the implications of all of this when it comes to ministering and serving in the world we live in today. This is a very cool visual essay by Alvin Chang on the ever-brilliant Pudding on how the basis of sci-fi films has changed over the last 70 years. Through his analysis he discovers that sci-fi films have gone from being set in the present, to what we see more commonly now with near-future dystopias where a catastrophic event has led to more inequality and authoritarianism. Basically, today's sci-fi is more likely to contain a commentary on today's society and the direction it feels like we’re heading. This reminds me of the Near Future Laboratory last year with sci-fi writer Madeline Ashby who said that it's easier to write dystopian fictions, because there's generally a bunch of conditions and situations that the majority of people can generally agree are 'very bad'. Whereas someone's utopia might be someone else's dystopia. (I’ve been thinking about this ever since). As Alvin asks at the end of his Pudding piece; "if we can't see paradise, how can we possibly navigate towards it?" Side note: at the end of last year I set myself a little experiment to read and watch more sci-fi as a way of improving my imagination. I'm rapidly becoming more and more convinced that imagination will be one of the most vital skills for leaders over the next x years as we enter more uncertain, ambiguous, and non-linear times. So I was glad to hear this very action endorsed by the one and only Dr. Jason Fox in conversation with Sam Spurlin on last week's episode of At Work With The Ready podcast. Here’s to more leaders reading material that builds their Imagination Quotient, and using that to direct us away from these future dystopias. #scifi #imagination #FuturesThinking

We welcome Dr. William M. Baum to the World Behavior Analysis Day podcast! Dr. Baum has made significant contributions to the field of behavior analysis. He has authored numerous influential journal articles covering a wide array of topics, from laboratory research to philosophical explorations. Two of his most widely cited papers are (1) the empirical and theoretical analysis of choice behavior, which he authored with Rachlin (1969 and 1974). In addition, he has written general philosophical works on behaviorism, focusing on biology and evolution. A consistent contributor to ABAI conventions, he has published 64 quality papers and is an invited presenter for the 2024 Association for Behavior Analysis International. In this insightful conversation, we explore the concepts of molar and molecular behavior, discuss some of his memories of B.F. Skinner, and dive into Dr. Baum's latest book, "Introduction to Behaviorism: An Evolutionary Perspective." We also touch upon how Eastern philosophies have influenced his perspective on behaviorism. Don't miss this enlightening episode with one of the leading figures in the field. Very interesting article from NPR’s Hidden Brain podcasts. This one discusses common mistakes we make in trying to persuade others of our point of view. Guest Robb Willer shares that ‘It really is helpful to establish some sort of basic respect, a basic emotional connection of like, I'm respecting your perspective, and I have enough intellectual humility to be also listening to you, and also that I'm open to persuasion in this conversation as well. Because if you signal really early in the conversation that you're not open to changing your mind, you're asking a lot for the other person to be open to it. And if there isn't a power imbalance that dictates that they have to, they're going to withhold that openness if you're not showing it as well.’ https://lnkd.in/g25EePAJ
