Do you have a UX checklist or UX framework? Companies with UX checklists run into trouble. On the surface, they are doing many things right: getting user feedback, hiring people with UX qualifications, iterating and delivering journeys, testing results and so on. However, they often fail if they don’t deeply understand the connection between all these items, the necessary leadership experience in UX, and a well-informed and integrated research program. Sadly, companies sometimes abandon UX entirely because it didn’t seem to deliver. Some things to know about UX checklists vs. frameworks: • With a framework, you can adjust on the fly as you learn, as constraints change, or as an organization matures in its ability to deliver exceptional UX. • With a checklist, you may mistake progress for a pitfall by not having experienced practitioners do the research, testing, and design activities. • In a framework, you always know why you are doing a particular activity and its connection to business and user value. • A framework is not a UX-only activity; it is interdisciplinary by nature. The nuance between the two is difficult to distinguish without some strategic guidance. Understanding UX Maturity! UX maturity shows how well a company integrates user experience into its work. It's crucial for creating products that users love and that help the business grow. Stages of UX maturity: 1️⃣ Absent - UX isn't part of the organization. - Products focus on tech or business goals, not user needs. What to do: Start basic user research to show how UX can help. 2️⃣ Limited - UX is recognized but not consistent. - UX efforts happen sporadically. What to do: Make UX processes standard across projects. Get resources for UX work. 3️⃣ Emergent - UX practices are getting more organized. - Using UX tools more often. Leaders support UX more. What to do: Create a team for UX. Use UX in projects from the start. 4️⃣ Structured - Clear UX processes are part of the company's work. - Roles for UX are clear. You’ve been sharing your UX research findings all wrong. Many teams mistakenly prioritise sharing their process and analysis, when in fact, these should be treated more as supplementary appendix items. Generally speaking, how you arrived at your insights is a level of detail that doesn't aid stakeholders with decision making. Sure, some stakeholders will want to dive below the surface, others may want to understand the facts, but many just need to understand: - What we know (aka the insight) - Why this is important (aka how this links to top level growth metrics or bottom line cost reduction for the company), and - What to do next (aka your recommendations). Consider using a GPS to navigate, you trust that it will lead you to your destination. You don't necessarily need to understand the intricate algorithms and mapping techniques behind it; you just need to know where to turn next and how long it will take to get there. So if you're looking to elevate your team from being recognised as ‘producers’ to ‘advisors’, and ensure your insights are actioned, shift your focus to communicating: 1️⃣ Know what 2️⃣ So what 3️⃣ Now what
