#PlayWell | “Sport is so important for young people’s physical, mental and social health. The group nature of team sport is particularly beneficial for social health outcomes such as reduced loneliness,” Dr Katherine Owen, University of Sydney.
Participation in sport builds a stronger Australia. We welcome this research from Dr Owen on the powerful role sport can play in connecting young people. Creating environments where participants can enjoy a lifelong involvement in sport is a key focus of the #PlayWell Strategy as we work to ensure everyone has a place in sport.
We know cost is also a barrier to participation and we look forward to working with Dr Owen and #PlayWell Leadership Group member Rochelle Eime on a project that will look at how to make community sport more affordable for all.
By working together we can increase the number of Australians involved in sport.

Many of us will be feeling a sense of worry, frustration, or even heartbreak today. Political shifts such as the return of Trump to the White House bring to light how delicate progress toward a truly inclusive world can feel. These changes remind us of the importance of staying the course here at home, doubling down on our commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) in Australian sport.
At From Now On - Sport For Impact we’re so proud to partner with organisations that exemplify leadership in this space. SWIM Coaches & Teachers Australia (SWIM)'s Levelling the Deck initiative is transforming swimming to be a sport where all abilities and backgrounds are welcomed with open arms. Swimming Victoria's Diving into the Future of Swimming and Leading Swimming Through Diversity projects are actively shaping inclusive pathways that celebrate and reflect the diversity of the communities it serves. Regional Sport Victoria is crafting a visionary strategy for accelerated diversity in Victorian sporting communities. And Hockey Australia is championing welcoming and fun hockey environments through programming that prioritises respect and positive experiences for all participants.
It's also crucial to acknowledge purpose-driven businesses enabling exemplar practice. Special recognition goes to Michael Woods at Inclusive Sport Design, whose dedication to growing the diversity of Australian sport has been invaluable in building environments where everyone can feel they belong. Partnering with Inclusive Sport Design is an honour, and together we’re committed to a future where Australian sport remains accessible and inclusive for all. Also a shout out to Lisa Cotton and Tammy McMillan for being incredible advocates for person-centred sport programming and partnering with me to create environments supportive of neurodiverse participants.
It's a critical time to continue to lead by example, celebrating the powerful work already underway across our sports and setting an unwavering standard for inclusive practices. This commitment isn’t just a choice; it’s a responsibility we hold for future generations of participants, fans, and communities.

The Office of Sport's National Sport Strategy was launched this week, bringing with it a renewed focus on inclusion, participation growth, and the broader social impact of sport. These priorities are well aligned with other key government initiatives, such as the Australian Sports Commission Play Well and Win Well strategies, as well as State and Territory Sport and Recreation plans.
But while the strategies are clear, the big question remains: How do we move from well-meaning policies to real, systemic change that benefits both participants and organisations?
The sporting organisations that will not only survive but thrive in this new landscape are those that choose to lead with bold, innovative approaches. It’s no longer enough to simply follow along; to truly stand out, organisations must take the reins and drive these priorities forward. But what does that look like in practice?
In my latest blog, I unpack five key characteristics of sport systems that are poised for success. These include adopting real-time participant feedback loops, breaking away from outdated performance-driven practices, embedding inclusion as a core principle, amplifying sport’s social impact, and leveraging a data-driven approach to decision making. Each of these shifts is critical for transforming rhetoric into results.
If you're involved in the sporting world—whether at the community level or leading a national body—I encourage you to check out how these approaches can help your organisation thrive in today’s rapidly evolving landscape. As always, I would love to hear your thoughts on the matter!

Yesterday was an amazing day in my county! County Armagh played County Galway in the All Ireland final, and what a final it was. After such a tight game, both teams deserved the win as both teams fought hard. Armagh, however, beat Galway by 1 point and brought the Sam Maguire Cup home. It has been 22 years since the cup was in the county.
Sport plays a crucial role in bringing communities together and promoting individual well-being. Here's a breakdown of its significance:
Community Building
Shared Passion -Sport provides a common ground for people of diverse backgrounds to connect over a shared love of the game.
Social Interaction- Participating in sports fosters teamwork, cooperation, and communication, leading to stronger social bonds within the community.
Sense of Belonging- Supporting local teams or clubs creates a sense of identity and belonging, strengthening community spirit.
Breaking Down Barriers- Sport can bridge divides based on race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or age, promoting inclusivity and understanding.
Physical Health- Regular physical activity through sports improves cardiovascular health, reduces the risk of chronic diseases, and helps maintain a healthy weight.
Mental Health- Engaging in sports releases endorphins, which can alleviate stress, anxiety, and depression. It also provides a sense of accomplishment and boosts self-esteem. We do need to get better at talking about mental health within the sports arena.
Life Skills Development: Sports teach valuable life skills such as discipline, teamwork, perseverance, leadership, and good sportsmanship. Both managers hugged at the end of the game yesterday 🥰
Personal Growth: Participating in sports can help individuals develop confidence, resilience, and a strong work ethic.
Sport is more than just a game; it's a powerful tool for building strong communities and enhancing individual well-being. By promoting physical activity, social interaction, and personal growth, sport plays a vital role in creating healthier, happier, and more connected societies.
